Rep. Jim McGovern, D-Mass., and 34 other lawmakers are urging the president to pardon environmental and human rights lawyer Steven Donziger, who was imprisoned or under house arrest for three years because of a contempt of court charge related to his work representing Indigenous farmers in a lawsuit against Chevron.

In the 1990s, Donziger represented thousands of farmers and indigenous people who, he said, suffered environmental and health problems caused by oil drilling in Ecuador. An Ecuadorian court awarded the plaintiffs $9.5 billion in damages. Texaco, purchased by Chevron in 2001, had previously withdrawn its assets from Ecuador. Chevron fought Donziger in the US, arguing successfully in court that he procured the Ecuadorian judgment through bribery and fraud. Donziger was later disbarred.

After Donziger declined to provide information about his electronic devices, he was charged with contempt of court. The matter had been referred to the US attorney for the Southern District of New York, who declined to prosecute due to resource constraints. The judge then appointed three private attorneys as special prosecutors.

And he got hit with contempt in court for not releasing his smartphone which has evidence of him bribing officials in Ecaudor. What an upright citizen!

The shit you put on there can be used against you and has been for decades.

But you can keep it encrypted (locked) but only by pass code; however, fngerprint unlock was ruled A-okay for compelling evidence. Even then, if there's enough evidence, they'll vmhit you with something else, so you'll still serve time.

They're commutations not pardons. The convictions aren't overturned just than any remaining time is shelved. It's mostly people who were already out anyway and were being watched by parol officers.
