I think I like it more because I grew up and worked in that environment and the show has it down pat.

Yes though it's kind of preachy sometimes in the 2000's liberal way (especially on the War on Drugs) but isn't near as hamfisted or annoying as current year messages.

It's usually talked about as one of the big 3 HBO originals.
The first episode is boring because it takes so much time introducing all the good guys and all the bad guys.
Overall it's kino, especially the first 3 seasons.

The show as a whole has held up very well throughout the years, the characters are just as well-written as when they premiered. The seasons vary in engagement, setting and tone; tempo and pacing between the different seasons can feel "off" but by the final season it's not too terrible.
In particular, the difference in pacing of the episodes between season 1 -> season 2 alongside the entirely new places and peoples introduced can make for viewer angst but it somehow comes together later in episodes.
