The main reason I and many others can't be bothered pushing for the death penalty coming back is that it's extremely expensive and inefficient. In America you go through 100s of appeal processes before you can actually kill anyone who most obviously did it, costing more in the process than just throwing them in a hole and forgetting about it.
On the spot execution for people caught doing major terrorism like driving a car through a market would be fine, but not gonna happen
