The answer for why this is different than Ukraine or Afghanistan or whatever is that those conflicts are far away from the US with abstract benefits to the US. Seizing nearby territory has a much more direct benefit for America. It would be catastrophic for maintaining US soft power and trust, but the average American probably doesn't really care about that. And while geopolitically we are allies, to a generic American Canada and Europe can sometimes seem like uppity vassal states who don't even like us while relying on US economicly and militarily. And with that in mind throwing around our overwhelming military and economic might to get what we want by force doesn't seem so bad.
Still an incredibly r-slurred move imo. I doubt the US going into conquest move can work if the population isn't overwhelmingly behind it. And it just isn't.
