I think a fair solution should be the government buys the loans and makes the borrowers pay them off but just don't charge interest anymore or at least just charge the minimum interest rate the fed offers to the banks

I'd allow students to default on student loans, if their degree gives them no job prospects, and I would force the banks to pay off such loans.

You have to forgive the loans at least to the point that they will never make money. We're spending billions on interest anyway.
