Belarus is the only other country on Planet Earth with exactly the same (very undemocratic) electoral processes as the UK.
Let that sunk in. The USSR collapses and each ex-Soviet country has a blank sheet to start afresh... and those in power looked around and said "How can we rig the system to avoid actual change and thus keep us in power, whilst creating the illusion of there being a democracy?".
