Isn't this just Star Wars 2?
imo we never should have stopped the Star Wars program. We did so because of r-slurred arguments like this quote from the comments:
Because you know Russia and China have totally given up on producing better weaponry. The real reason the USSR hated that program is because they were literally incapable of competing, the US and NATO are so much more powerful that the only way they can get parity is by convincing r-slurs that we should hamstring ourselves.

Context
All of this stuff has been looked into and doesn't work or is easily defeated. And nothing has really changed in the last 40 years. The same fundamental problems still exist. The main one is, if attacker's missile has 20 MIRVs and decoys then your missile has to be 1/20th the cost to make sense.

Yeah I thought the real issue was MIRVs.
Even if your advanced laser system has a 99% rate of success, it only takes 1 failure/miss to lose an entire city. One miss and all of DC is gone for example. So you need to destroy the warhead before it splits, but can't they be designed to split basically anytime after the main ascent stage, since that's the only time they need a bunch of propellant?

That's my understanding. Once you're out in space you should be able to split it apart.
Knowing how insane humans are, the enemy would just build 100 times more missiles.
