well unlike the elusive weapons of mass destruction, I can quite clearly see Chinese ports next to the panama canal. With the clear objective of kicking china out of panama with or without direct action, its almost guaranteed to go better. Also, quite frankly, panama is much closer and much less threatening than the middle east
So we're going to assert our right to invade any country that has Chinese investments?
woah, that's a big leap. The panama canal is integral to US economic and military power. There is specific chinese investment surrounding the canal which could pose a risk for US security and prosperity. While its not the chinese state itself operating these ports, we've clearly seen the CCP use hong-kong subsidiaries for intelligence gathering and soft power control all over the world. Saying this is merely chinese investment is disingenuous, its an overwhelming amount of chinese investment in a very strategically located area.
Also panama cannot destroy the panama canal, at least not in any meaningful way in a realistic time period. Panama literally doesn't have a military and the whole canal would have to be rigged with explosives for any damage to be done in the time for an F-35 to travel from California to Panama City. Also its a fricking massive trench, caving in a few walls won't do shit. Even if you destroyed some locks, the vast majority of the investment was put into building the giant as trench for boats to go into, which incidentally becomes the most valuable part.
Also remember, Iraq had the 4th largest military in the world when we invaded. Afghanistan is notoriously hard to control (see britain and russia). Those two are just not comparable to a tiny, centralized latin american country. If dole fruit company can take them over, I think we could

You could say that about all kinds of places. The rest of the world isn't going to just sit back and wait to see if they're on the list of countries "integral to US economic and military power".

I'm gonna let you in on a little secret: I've been monitoring what ships go through the canal in real time for over a decade. I guess I'm a threat to national security now.

How long would it take to repair the locks? How many ships would have to go around Cape Horn? A thousand? They would need to wait until they could get more fuel, taking even longer. Have you ever heard the expression "time is money"?
Uh, countries do know if they're on that list, which does include include Panama. I mean seriously, many countries actively encourage US military bases to be built on their soil. They are giving up some of their sovereignty for US protection and economic benefit. Now I do acknowledge that there a ton of countries that the US operates in without sufficient justification, whether it be above board or below, however, I don't care about what other countries think.
Also, tracking a ship is very different from controlling a port where a ship docks at. China can obviously see every ship in the ocean. The ports are important because they can track exactly what the ships are carrying, among other things. If you want to get into spy shenanigans its easy to see why the ports might be useful. And, they could theoretically just stop all ships from passing through by just jacking up the cost to transit. Also two Chinese ports are building a massive bridge across the panama canal, which could actually be used to shut down the canal immediately. This is such a dumb hill to die on, chinese presence is bad in our most important canal. We're already going to be tariffing half the fricking world, what the frick are other countries going to do if we kick china out, even if by force.
repairing locks might take months. It will probably lose a lot of money. We're also the richest country on earth. We've blown way more money on way less just to hurt our enemies. With all the tariffs going up, I doubt any price increases for goods will be comparatively noticeable
A more aggressive US doesn't mean a less reliable one Also china isn't a paragon of stability either, with their melee battles with india, covid policy, housing market instability and crashing birth rates coming to mind.

We just got out of incredibly costly wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, not the toughest opponents, and you want to start another one just for fun?

So we're going to assert our right to invade any country that has Chinese investments? Which includes...
...all of them. I'm sure that will go over well.
I consider their ability to destroy the Panama Canal to be pretty threatening. Why in the frick would we do this to ourselves?

If Congress lets him do it, China will be the only reliable superpower around. And China will retaliate, as they have companies in Panama.
