Neom: Saudi Arabia sentences tribesmen to death for resisting displacement

A Saudi court sentenced three members of the Howeitat, a tribe forcibly ejected to make way for the $500 bn Neom megacity, to death earlier this month for resisting displacement, a UK-based rights group has reported.

Shadli al-Huweiti is the brother of Abdul Rahim al-Howeiti, a 43-year-old Tabuk resident who was shot dead by Saudi special forces in April 2020 after protesting the government's eviction orders, including in videos he regularly posted to YouTube.

Neom: Yet-to-be-built Saudi resort chosen to host 2029 Asian Winter Games Read More » Two other Howeitat members - Abdulilah al-Howeiti and Abdullah Dukhail al-Howeiti - were given 50-year prison terms and 50-year travel bans in August for supporting their family's refusal to be evicted from their homes in the kingdom's Tabuk province.

They were given 34 years and 45 years respectively over tweets critical of the Saudi government.

Adel al-Saeed, vice president of the European Saudi Organisation for Human Rights said in a series of tweets that the new death sentences reveal how the penalty is being used "in an unprecedented way to include all forms of objection to government decisions".

Middle East Eye has asked the Saudi government for comment.

2015: "The FDA concluded, 'FDA believes that the arguments presented, individually and collectively, do not establish the safety of SLH for consumption, nor do they point to a general recognition of safety.'"

2017: "It was always unlikely that SLH would have strong and obvious toxic effects in the short term; any adverse effects from a novel food substance would likely be subtle. Long-term studies with relatively large numbers of animals are required in order to reveal the significance of such effects. Given these requirements, it seems clear that Impossible Foods’ study was statistically weak. There were too few animals in each test group (10 per s*x per group) and again, the study was too short in duration (28 days in a rat is equivalent to just 2-3 years in a human) to clarify any health concerns from long-term consumption of this product."

"The only way of ascertaining if potentially adverse effects seen in short studies are truly adverse or have lasting consequences is to extend the study length to the rats’ full lifetimes (2-3 years) and to do multigenerational testing. In this case, neither was done."

The Indian government has advised its nationals in Canada to exercise caution, citing “a sharp increase in incidents of hate crimes, sectarian violence and anti-India activities” in the North American country.

In an advisory issued on Friday, the Indian foreign ministry asked the Indians in Canada to “remain vigilant”.

“In view of the increasing incidences of crimes … Indian nationals and students from India in Canada and those proceeding to Canada for travel/education are advised to exercise due caution,” it said.

https://i.rdrama.net/images/1684135656656017.webp

The advisory said New Delhi has requested the Canadian authorities to investigate the crimes and take appropriate action. “The perpetrators of these crimes have not been brought to justice so far in Canada,” it said.

The ministry did not detail any alleged hate crimes, nor it did provide information to back up its claim that Canada has seen an increase in such incidents.

Canada’s foreign affairs department and a spokesperson for Prime Minister Justin Trudeau did not immediately respond to Al Jazeera’s request for comment on Friday morning.

In the advisory, New Delhi urged its nationals – workers and students – in Canada to register with the Indian mission in Ottawa or consulates in Toronto and Vancouver.

Indian media reports on Friday said the advisory followed reports of a "referendum" purportedly organised by a faction among the Sikhs in Canada, demanding a separate Khalistan nation in the northern Indian state of Punjab.

The separatist movement was at its peak in the 1980s.

In June 1984, New Delhi sent troops to the Golden Temple -- the community's holiest site in Punjab's Amritsar city -- in a military operation targeting pro-Khalistan leaders. The Operation Blue Star, as the army assault was known, killed hundreds.

In October that year, former Indian Prime Minister Indira Gandhi was assassinated by two of her Sikh bodyguards, an event that led to nationwide anti-Sikh riots in which thousands were killed.

Today, Sikhs form a large chunk of the 1.6 million Indian diaspora in Canada -- more than 3 percent of its population. Canada has 17 parliamentarians and three cabinet ministers of Indian origin, including defence minister Anita Anand, the Hindustan Times newspaper said.

India has repeatedly raised the issue of Canada allowing the Khalistani separatist groups to operate on its land.

New Delhi believes the Trudeau government has not done enough to address its concerns about the activities of pro-Khalistan elements in Canada, the Hindustan Times said.

India's foreign ministry spokesman Arindam Bagchi on Thursday called the referendum in Canada a "farcical exercise held by extremist and radical elements," according to a report by the NDTV network.

Bagchi said it was "deeply objectionable" that such an exercise was allowed in a friendly country.

In response, the Canadian government said it respects the sovereignty and territorial integrity of India and will not recognise the so-called referendum, according to Indian media reports.

Iran: Leaked documents reveal top-level orders to armed forces to ‘mercilessly confront’ protesters

Iran’s highest military body instructed the commanders of armed forces in all provinces to “severely confront” protesters who took to the streets following the death in custody of Mahsa Amini at the hands of Iran’s morality police, Amnesty International said today after obtaining leaked official documents which revealed the authorities’ plan to systematically crush the protests at any cost.

The crackdown has left at least 52 identified victims dead and hundreds injured to date.

State denial and coverup after a week of unlawful killings Amnesty International has obtained a leaked copy of an official document which states that, on 21 September 2022, the General Headquarters of Armed Forces issued an order to commanders in all provinces instructing them to “severely confront troublemakers and anti-revolutionaries”.

Protesters tortured and otherwise ill-treated Amnesty International has documented widespread patterns of torture and other ill-treatment by security forces, including severe beatings of protesters and bystanders.

Her clothes were coming off her body and the security forces kept pulling her by the hair…” “Two nights ago”, the protester added, “several of my friends were beaten with batons.

Any force used in response to such violence must at all times comply with the principles of legality, necessity and proportionality in accordance with international law.

Michigan lawyer running for judge caught on camera allegedly belt-whipping girlfriend

MUSKEGON, Mich. – Two weeks after winning the August primary, judicial candidate Jason Kolkema appeared to viciously whip his girlfriend with a belt during an argument in his western Michigan apartment, presumably unaware that nearby witnesses were recording the scene.

I understand the anger and disappointment, especially from the people who voted for me and supported me ... All of the facts will be revealed in due time," Kolkema wrote.

'You could see the belt connecting' "It was sick, makes you just sick to your stomach, and that's all you can think about for days and days and days," said the woman, adding she is outraged by Kolkema's claim that he hit the chair.

One day after his arraignment, Kolkema pressed his campaign in a Facebook post: "My experience as an attorney is unmatched and I remain the best candidate to preside over the types of cases within the jurisdiction of the Circuit Court in Muskegon County."

Uvalde school district suspends school police force, 2 school officials placed on administrative leave

CNN — The Uvalde Consolidated Independent School District Friday said it had suspended its school police force, less than five months after the attack that left 19 children and two teachers dead.

Officers currently employed will fill other roles in the district,” the district said in a statement.

The moves come in the wake of a CNN report Wednesday which identified newly hired Uvalde school officer Crimson Elizondo as one of the state troopers under investigation for her actions during the response to the Robb Elementary School massacre in May. The school district issued a statement on Thursday, following CNN’s report, announcing Elizondo’s termination.

The school police chief was fired and now seven DPS officers are being investigated.

A source close to the investigation also confirmed that to CNN.

This is a developing story and will be updated.

Belarus President Alexander Lukashenko on Thursday banned price increases with immediate effect to curb galloping inflation in the former Soviet country.

Lukashenko, who has ruled Belarus with an iron fist since 1994, is known for folksy eccentricities and radical suggestions, such as drinking a shot of vodka daily to ward off the coronavirus.

"From Oct. 6, all price increases are forbidden. Forbidden! From today. Not from tomorrow, from today. So that prices aren't driven up in the next 24 hours," Lukashenko told a meeting with officials.

He said consumer prices were "outrageous" and had increased by 18% year-on-year.

Belarus Strongman Says Pupils Should Harvest Potatoes

"Meat, dairy products, poultry... are getting more expensive. In Minsk there has been a shortage of eggs in recent days," Lukashenko, 68, said.

"The task is to return to an inflation rate of 7-8% by next year," he added.

Belarus, which borders Ukraine, is a staunch ally of Russia and allowed its territory to be used by Moscow's troops to launch its military campaign against Kyiv in February.

Belarus has been hit with a wave of Western sanctions for aiding Russia's military action in Ukraine and for a ferocious post-election crackdown in 2020.
