Putin's reliance on mercenaries 'backfires' after one of them guns down Russian lieutenant colonel: report
On Wednesday, The Daily Beast reported that Vladimir Putin's effort to mobilize mercenaries for his war effort in Ukraine is descending into disaster, with one of them killing a Russian lieutenant colonel in an incident the Kremlin is trying to cover up.
Per the report, the incident — which took place in an unknown area — was highlighted by two Russian Telegram channels.
And it is just the latest in a series of violent incidents within the ranks.
The fight reportedly erupted after some of the contract soldiers demanded the newly arrived draftees hand over their mobile phones and gear.
It also comes as the Russian military faces dire shortages of supplies that render them unable to give even the most basic of necessities to currently deployed and newly drafted soldiers.

Hate crimes reach record high as offences against transgender people double
“The rise seen in the latest year may have been affected by the lower levels of crime recorded in the year ending March 2021 due to the Covid-19 pandemic restrictions,” the Home Office said.
Chief executive Jabeer Butt OBE added: “The government's Hate Crime Action Plan appears to have fallen off the face of the earth, but we need them to wake up and renew the commitment to take action now, as well as recognise the very real damage that harmful narratives can cause to Black, Asian and minority ethnic families and individuals.”

North Korea flies warplanes near South Korea, trading demonstrations of power
North Korea's military flew a dozen warplanes near its border with South Korea, which prompted it to scramble 30 military planes in response on Thursday.
This military dust-up comes as tension on the Korean Peninsula has increased in recent weeks as North Korea has continued to increase the frequency of its launch missile tests.
KIM JONG UN'S NORTH KOREA FIRES TWO BALLISTIC MISSILES ONE DAY BEFORE KAMALA HARRIS'S DMZ VISIT
Prior to the fracas in the air, North Korea launched two short-range ballistic missiles toward its eastern waters, and these were in response to the United States's military movements after it launched a nuclear-capable missile over Japan earlier this week.
Following Thursday’s launches by North Korea, the U.S., South Korea, and Japan performed a missile defense exercise in the Sea of Japan.
“This exercise enhances the interoperability of our collective forces and demonstrates the strength of the trilateral relationship with our Japan and Republic of Korea (ROK) allies, which is forward-leaning, reflective of our shared values, and resolute against those who challenge regional stability,” the U.S. Pacific Command statement said.
It has aggressively launched missile tests this year, with more than 40 ballistic and cruise missile tests, leading to increased tension in the region.

Putin’s Dueling Foot Soldiers Are Now Apparently Killing Each Other Off
While Ukraine’s military has been successfully chasing Russian troops out of one territory after another, Vladimir Putin’s foot soldiers have apparently been turning their weapons on each other as the Russian leader’s “special military operation” continues to come apart at the seams in spectacular fashion.
The growing conflict resulted in a Wagner fighter gunning down a lieutenant colonel in the Russian army—a deadly episode of “friendly fire” that the Kremlin is said to be trying to sweep under the rug, according to the human rights group Gulagu.net.
“They are trying to hush up the incident and prevent publicity.
The fight reportedly erupted after some of the contract soldiers demanded the newly arrived draftees hand over their mobile phones and gear.
“The controversies surrounding the poorly executed partial mobilization, coupled with significant Russian defeats in Kharkiv Oblast and around Lyman, have intensified infighting between pro-Putin Russian nationalist factions and are creating new fractures among voices who speak to Putin’s core constituencies,” the Institute for the Study of War wrote in its Tuesday assessment.
"The territories will be with Russia forever, they will be returned.”

https://old.reddit.com/r/ukpolitics/comments/xx4qak/national_grid_warns_households_could_face/
Households could experience a series of three-hour power cuts this winter if Vladimir Putin shuts off gas supplies from Russia and Britain experiences a cold snap, National Grid has warned.
Such an event would mean consumers in different parts of the country being notified a day in advance of three-hour blocks of time during which their power would be cut off, in an effort to reduce total consumption by 5%.
The emergency plan would need to be approved by King Charles on the recommendation of the business secretary.
National Grid said that in the “unlikely event” of a shortage of gas supplies that some consumers would be without power for “pre-defined periods” during a day to “ensure the overall security and integrity of the electricity system across Great Britain”.
It said there would have to be reduced electricity imports from Europe and insufficient gas supply to power stations for the planned power cuts to happen.
National Grid has published a range of scenarios that could occur this winter as it assesses a highly uncertain period for power supplies, amid the fallout from Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.
A senior industry source said: “We’re heading into winter in an unprecedented situation. Even during the cold war, the Soviet Union kept the gas flowing so it’s very unpredictable.”
National Grid has worked on a series of initiatives to attempt to manage supply and demand this winter. It is ready to call into action five coal-fired power plants, which can generate up to 2 gigawatts of power – after signing deals with Drax, EDF and Uniper at a cost of £340m to £395m.
It will also launch a “demand flexibility service” on 1 November that will encourage businesses and consumers to use power outside peak demand periods, including early evenings on weekdays. Consumers with smart meters will be notified the day before and will be paid for using power outside these time periods. The initiative was trialled by Octopus Energy earlier this year.
National Grid hopes this service will free up an extra 2GW, enough to power about 600,000 homes, if enough companies and households participate.
The network operator stressed it was “cautiously confident” that there would be enough electricity to meet the demands of businesses and consumers this winter.
In its “base case” scenario, National Grid’s electricity system operator believes there will be about 3.7GW more of electricity generated than the country needs. It forecast a “sufficient operational surplus throughout winter” although it expects tight margins from early December through to mid-January, excluding Christmas.
However, National Grid mapped out two alternate scenarios in which a shortage of gas in Europe, which could be caused by Russia cutting supplies, or outages in another country’s generation fleet, interrupted energy supplies.
Under the first scenario, electricity imports from France, Belgium and the Netherlands are cut for the whole winter. This would put the coal-fired stations into action and trigger the demand flexibility service.
Under the more drastic vision, a shortage of gas would knock out around 10GW of gas-fired power generation and “temporary rota load shedding”, where consumers are disconnected, would be employed.
A reduction in Russian gas supplied into Europe, including the cut off of the damaged Nord Stream 1 pipeline, has caused a rush for gas supplies in Europe. A European Commission target of filling gas storage facilities by 80% by 1 November looks likely to be hit, however a period of colder weather could push up demand. Although Britain is not reliant on Russian gas, importers are exposed to the knock on effects.
The majority of Great Britain’s gas supplies come from the North Sea and Norway, with the bulk of the remainder from liquified natural gas imports from across the globe. Imports from Europe, notably during winter, typically account for about 6% of gas supplies.
However, if a squeeze in Europe puts pressure on these supplies, Britain may be forced to seek gas from different sources, including increased LNG imports where there is competition from countries around the world.
National Grid said it expected gas and electricity prices to remain high through the winter.
Any potential for power cuts will also be highly dependent on the weather. The European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts this week said Europe could suffer a colder winter with less rain and wind than average. It predicted a period of high pressure over western Europe in November and December that could reduce the amount of renewable power generated.
Fintan Slye, the executive director of National Grid ESO, said: “Under our base case, as set out in the winter outlook, we are cautiously confident that there will be adequate margins through the winter period.
“As an expert and responsible operator of Great Britain’s electricity system it is incumbent on us to also factor in external factors and risks beyond our control like the unprecedented turmoil and volatility in energy markets in Europe and beyond.”

Muhoozi is known to enjoy alcoholic beverages and as such, he has been criticized about tweeting while drunk and posting often controversial tweets. It is also stated in the UPDF Act 7 of 2005, under Disgraceful conduct, section 139, that, "A person in the Defence Forces who is drunk, whether or not on duty, commits an offence and is on conviction, liable to imprisonment not exceeding seven years.". No case has been brought to the UPDF Court martial's attention about Muhoozi's behavior as a drunk serving officer.

Uganda's President Yoweri Museveni has asked Kenyans for "forgiveness" after his son - a senior military officer - tweeted about invading their country.
His apology came a day after he sacked Muhoozi Kainerugaba as commander of the army's land forces.
But Mr Museveni softened the blow by promoting him to the rank of general, and retaining him as his adviser.
Mr Museveni has long been suspected of grooming the 48 year old to succeed him when he eventually steps down.
Gen Kainerugaba has increasingly been entering the political arena, with his critics saying this was in breach of the military's code of discipline.
His latest intervention came on Monday when he sent out a series of tweets - some serious, some in jest - about Kenya.
He said he had spoken to Kenya's former President Uhuru Kenyatta, and expressed regret that he had stepped down at the end of his two terms in August.
"My only problem with my beloved big brother is that he didn't stand for a third term. We would have won easily!" Gen Kainerugaba said.
In a later tweet to his more than 600,000 followers, he said: "It wouldn't take us, my army and me, 2 weeks to capture [Kenya's capital] Nairobi."
This led to an uproar on Twitter, with people accusing Gen Kainerugaba of being "reckless" and jeopardising relations between the neighbouring states.
It led to him urging Kenyans to "relax".
"I would never beat up the Kenyan army because my father told me never to attempt it! So our people in Kenya should relax!" Gen Kainerugaba tweeted.
Although the Kenyan government did not comment, Uganda's foreign ministry issued a statement saying Uganda treasured its "strong bilateral relations" with it "brotherly neighbour".
In the latest attempt at damage-control, Mr Museveni said he had spoken to Kenya's President William Ruto, and he was "very sorry" about his son's tweets.
"I ask our Kenyan brothers and sisters to forgive us for tweets sent by General Muhoozi, former Commander of Land Forces here, regarding the election matters in that great country.
"It is not correct for Public officers, be they civilian or military, to comment or interfere in any way, in the internal affairs of brother countries," Mr Museveni said.
He added that despite his son's "mistake", he had promoted him to the rank of full general because he could still make "many positive contributions".
"I know for a fact that General Muhoozi is a passionate Pan-Africanist," Mr Museveni said.
His son is known for his controversial tweets, including expressing support for Russia's invasion of Ukraine, and Tigrayan rebels fighting the Ethiopian government.
He also tweeted that he would give 100 cattle - apparently as a bride price - to Italy's incoming far-right Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni for being "fearless and true".
"I know Europeans give girls they like flowers? I have never understood it. In our culture you give a girl you like a cow," he added.

"As a privileged, white, cis female, seeing this was devastating," Washington County epidemiologist Kimberly Repp said in an interview of her and other county epidemiologists' research results.
Portland area health officials are calling for change after finding that death certificates misgendered more than half of transgender or nonbinary people who died in the decade ending last year.
A combined research effort by Multnomah, Washington and Clackamas county epidemiologists, published Aug. 31 in the Journal of Public Health Management & Practice and made available to the public free of charge for two weeks starting Wednesday, found that nearly 30 Portlanders' gender identities were erased after death because there is no system to ensure those identities are recorded when people die.
The accuracy of death records is important not only for individuals and families but because they are used for research and can affect how federal money is directed. While previous studies have shown transgender people are more likely to die by suicide and homicide, for example, the data is limited because neither Oregon nor the federal government have systems to track gender identity upon death.
"As a privileged, white, cis female, seeing this was devastating," Washington County epidemiologist Kimberly Repp said in an interview of her and other county epidemiologists' research results.
The researchers found that at multiple bureaucratic steps in the death process, there is no consistent way to identify if someone is transgender or nonbinary. And they found that for 47 Portland area people identified as transgender or nonbinary in the detailed reports produced after a death investigation from 2011-2021, 29 were misgendered in the official record.
"If you extrapolate that to the national level, we are significantly and very seriously undercounting deaths in our transgender persons," Repp said, with the likely consequence that health officials don't know the scale of fatal violence transgender people are subjected to.
Most case management software doesn't have a field for gender identity, the researchers said, which is a problem if someone's s*x at birth doesn't match their gender. They also found that next-of-kin dictate the s*x listed on a person's death certificate, which is a problem if they aren't aware of or disagree with the person's identity.
To address the problem, the researchers made several recommendations. They suggested that gender identity be trackable in the software officials use to track deaths and be a federally mandated field in death certificates. They also suggested that death investigators be trained in how and why to track gender identity.
"From the data standpoint, this is a simple problem to fix," Clackamas County epidemiologist Molly Mew said in a statement. "The systems just need more inclusive boxes."

One thot got 3 years in prison for encouraging her teenage followers to become camgirls. But they're going after moids now too:

Wow, this guy sounds like the kind of r-slur that zoomers here love too.
Malik committed many acts that violate the law in Egypt, as he shared several videos that contain indecent words, as well as disrespecting women and insulting farmers in Egypt, not to mention that he previously described some critics as "dogs".
Don't frick with the felaheen if you know what's good for you.
Unfortunately these zoomers are a pale imitation of the high-quality Egyptian thots that used to get policed not so long ago, like Egyptian Shakira:

US believes elements within Ukraine's government authorized assassination near Moscow, sources say
The US intelligence community believes that the car bombing that killed Darya Dugina, the daughter of prominent Russian political figure Alexander Dugin, was authorized by elements within the Ukrainian government, sources briefed on the intelligence told CNN. The US was not aware of the plan beforehand, according to the sources, and it is still unclear who exactly the US believes signed off on the assassination. It is also not clear whether the US intelligence community believes that Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky was aware of the plot or authorized it. To date, Ukrainian strikes inside Russia have largely been limited to attacks on fuel depots and military bases in cities along the Russia-Ukraine border, like Belgorod.

Kremlin says annexation and retreat are not a contradiction amid Ukrainian successes
Russian President Vladimir Putin attends a concert marking the declared annexation of the Russian-controlled territories of four Ukraine's Donetsk, Luhansk, Kherson and Zaporizhzhia regions, after holding what Russian authorities called referendums in the occupied areas of Ukraine that were condemned by Kyiv and governments worldwide, in Red Square in central Moscow, Russia, September 30, 2022.
They will be with Russia forever and they will be returned."
The contrast between a set of defeats on the battlefield and lofty language from the Kremlin about Russia's might have raised concerns within the Russian elite about the conduct of the war.
Together with Crimea, which Russia annexed in 2014, Putin's total claim amounts to more than 22% of Ukrainian territory, though the exact borders of the four regions he is annexing are still yet to be finally clarified.
Moscow, which recognised Ukraine's post-Soviet borders in the 1994 Budapest Memorandum, will never give the regions back, Putin said on Friday at a grand Kremlin treaty-signing ceremony which brought the partially controlled regions into Russia.
Kyiv denies Russian speakers were persecuted.

The OPEC+ alliance announced Wednesday that it will cut oil production by 2 million barrels a day, a move that's likely to send gas prices higher again after a year of tumult at the pump.
In its statement announcing the cuts, the OPEC+ alliance cited the "uncertainty that surrounds the global economic and oil market outlooks.”
It represents the largest cut in production since the start of the pandemic.
In a statement, the Biden administration said it was disappointed in the decision, calling it “shortsighted” in light of global energy prices already lifted higher by Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.
“At a time when maintaining global supply of energy is of paramount importance, this development will have the most negative impact on lower- and middle-income countries that are already reeling from elevated energy prices,” it said.
The decision by the oil cartel and its allies, announced in Vienna, comes after the price of oil and gas spiked this summer amid the Russian invasion of Ukraine. Prices trended downward from July to mid-September, as President Joe Biden sought to reduce gas prices, and stress on Americans’ wallets, ahead of the midterm elections.
Capital Economics research group now expects global oil prices to rise from about $93 to $100 per barrel, with U.S. benchmark prices rising from $88 to $92. At the outset of Russia's invasion of Ukraine, global oil prices had climbed to as much as $128.
"We had always expected supply growth to slow later this year and into 2023, but this latest OPEC+ action has re-enforced our view that prices will end the year a little higher," Caroline Bain, chief commodities analyst for Capital Economics, said in a note following the Wednesday announcement.
U.S. gas prices had already been trending higher in recent weeks amid increased demand and refinery issues in the U.S. The average price of a gallon of gas on Wednesday was $3.83, the highest since late August.
“The regional differences in gas prices are stark at the moment, with prices on the West Coast hitting $6 a gallon and higher, while Texas and Gulf Coast states have prices dipping below $3 in some areas,” Andrew Gross, an AAA spokesperson, said in a statement Monday.
At least six California refineries are undergoing maintenance, Gross said, and there is limited pipeline supply to the West Coast from locations east of the Rockies.
Political analysts have observed a strong correlation between gas prices and Biden's approval rating, as voters home in on gas prices as a proxy for inflation and thus the state of the economy.
Wall Street analysts say the Biden administration could counter OPEC's move by releasing stocks from the U.S.'s strategic petroleum reserve, and even boosting the so-called NOPEC bill that would penalize other oil producing states by opening them up to antitrust suits.
OPEC+, whose de facto leader is Saudi Arabia, is comprised of 13 oil-exporting countries and 11 nonmember allied countries, including Russia.
