I feel like this is true and falsr at the same time. There are some song that sound great with or withoutut lyrics(ex. lights by Ellie Golding) and others where the lyrics make the song(Tom's Diner by Susan Vega). This can be said about anything that compliments or supplements a musical score. At the end of the day what makes a song great and what contributes to that greatness is unique to the song/arrangment of sounds and artistry..

Radiohead sucks butt. Their rhythm section is weak, the guitar riffs are some of the most forgettable in human history, the singer just cries and clutches the mic presumably so he won't blow away. Well their music is more compositional, if you don't like it that's fine but complaining there aren't any memorable guitar riffs on an album like Kid A is r-slurred. They do have a few memorable riffs on their earlier albums, My Iron Lung, Street Spirit, and Paranoid Android come to mind. They just weren't a very good rock band. Kid A and In Rainbows are both incredibly unique in their sound.

I agree that Thom Yorke especially takes himself too seriously. I don't listen to their new shit at all but like I said earlier OK Computer, Kid A and In Rainbows are all excellent albums all the way through. In Rainbows especially is good imo, every single song on that album is fantastic.

The Smiths were good because they understood that their noodling was a backing track for a pop singer who was charismatic and a good lyricist. Radiohead doesn't have a member who can give the band an actual soul or purpose. Or, if it does, the soul is a version of Morrissey who has spent the last six years getting starved and water bordered in Guantanamo by the staff of the Huffingtonpost.

This is true of many genres in general. Radio sucks except for old music, and even then not great. I think this is because the best songs are tge most expensive for the station to play.

They're also pretty restricted in the kinds of songs they'll play. Most stations won't play a song with a longer softer intro for example. Sometimes they make a "radio edit" of a song to address this but obviously they can't do that for every banger.
