So here's the link to her video. Basically she says became a physicist back in the 90s filled with idealism, says she's against female only scholarships as she got one and her colleagues doubted her suitability due to that. Then she talks about how most of her job (and that of academic physicists in general) is limited to writing useless papers or using PhD and post Doc students to write said papers with your name in order to get more grants while being dissuaded from doing research in the fields you're interested at.

The reddit threads
She's already done some sketchy vids in hot topics beyond her expertise.
Her vids about Trans people for example, in which she speaks about ROGD as though it's a real medical phenomenon.
TERFdom is a massive canary in the coalmine for influencers/commentators
At this point it's a great litmus test of guru-dom, whether or not they have an strong opinion on trans issues. It's like a pound shop version of the gurometer.
I predict that in the future she will 1.Talk worse about academia and academics 2.Talk more about american politics (fox news stuff) 3.At some point she will start simping for some capitalist
Sabine rapidly descending down the grifter pipeline
As long as she's talking about real science and doing it accurately, how is she a grifter? Because she accepts money from sponsors?
Aye, this one not so much! More the ones where she talks about… capitalism? And other topics she doesn't have expertise in
Yeah the capitalism video was quite stupid
Bonus on her capitalism video

This is 100% real tho its why every grad just jumps into corporate or government contract work. Turns out researchers would rather do something productive even if its making raytheon missiles 10% more deadly over pooping out 20 papers a year half of which are slight rewrites of last years papers.
Im just counting the days i can be done with my hellish masters and just do contract sequencing all day for a lab. Or if that fails work at Starbucks until the state government needs a new water tester. And i have the benefit of being a biologist so its way easier to get funding by just tying everything to cancer or alzheimers can't imagine how bad it is for physics.

I would 100% agree to be someone's live in cat maid wife (male) if I had food and board (just give me time to learn cooking)

I've been to my bio friend's courses a few times for fun, it's all they talk about on the first day.

The goal of chemistry PhD is always industry job, not being stuck in academia lmao.

I didn't go that far as to get a phD but I did do my projects on polymorphism pharmokinetics. That shit keeps you up at night lol

fr tho, my sister is getting the equivalent of a phd for her speciality and the r-slurs she has to work with is insane. They treat her like dogshit.

Its why Im noping out right after masters. I feel like ive already learned everything useful in a year so I just need to spend the last year stressing out over thinking of 3 original projects a semester and hoping the TAs dont wake up on the wrong side of the bed and decide to grade strictly randomly. When ive worked in a lab its so much more fun and supportive and it turns out when you dont know shit you can just ask someone or look it up rather then failing lol. You also have the time and resources and support to actually do a project rather then being told "uh do a project on anything bio related for this class and I cant help you because that would be unfair" and I have to slap together something original from public cowtools and data. Its also way easier to manage group work when everyone is given a set time and space to work every day rather then having to wrangle people after class.

Yeah the shit puts up with is crazy. Her lab partner takes credit for her work and the prof is a total butthole.
I tease her about it but it's wild too that she'll make less than me when she graduates- I only have computer autism and an HS degree

If I wanted money id be a doctor or grind out fast food wagism when I turned 18 to be a regional manager. I'm fine making 50k-60k starting out as a researcher still that makes it not worth it for me to take out for debt for a 2-4 year PHD when PHDs only get you more pay once you enter senior positions.

Yeah that's my understanding too, a PhD only gets a pay bump at very high levels. Makes sense for intense engineering fields (semiconductors comes to mind) but a hard sell for most ventures.

Not true, physicists love their research. The reason they go private is because there are no academic jobs.
Jump in the discussion.

Yeah we love research not being forced to shit out 20 papers on nothing a year to get funding. Academic jobs suck and force you to do teaching, mentor students, and basically fund yourself via grants while in a private job you can just do research.

Private jobs have other bullshit to deal with too and less freedom. The bottleneck in physics academia is definitely not the amount of people willing to go into physics academia.
And physics grad students are not "counting the days until they can get out".

Well im speaking from a bio perspective and yeah private jobs have less freedom but do does starting out in academia where you need someone to co author all your shit so they actually get funding. To me id always take less freedom over more pay and a more focused environment.
