her colleagues doubted her suitability due to that. Then she talks about how most of her job (and that of academic physicists in general) is limited to writing useless papers or using PhD and post Doc students to write said papers with your name in order to get more grants while being dissuaded from doing research in the fields you're interested at.

i don't think she's a contrarian. i like her videos a lot, she never sneers or gets smug, she's willing to evaluate new ideas with an open mind and doesn't seem to be afraid of getting ridiculed for it...but a lot of the time she decides the new ideas don't have a lot of evidence for them anyway.

This is 100% real tho its why every grad just jumps into corporate or government contract work. Turns out researchers would rather do something productive even if its making raytheon missiles 10% more deadly over pooping out 20 papers a year half of which are slight rewrites of last years papers.
Im just counting the days i can be done with my hellish masters and just do contract sequencing all day for a lab. Or if that fails work at Starbucks until the state government needs a new water tester. And i have the benefit of being a biologist so its way easier to get funding by just tying everything to cancer or alzheimers can't imagine how bad it is for physics.

Its why Im noping out right after masters. I feel like ive already learned everything useful in a year so I just need to spend the last year stressing out over thinking of 3 original projects a semester and hoping the TAs dont wake up on the wrong side of the bed and decide to grade strictly randomly. When ive worked in a lab its so much more fun and supportive and it turns out when you dont know shit you can just ask someone or look it up rather then failing lol. You also have the time and resources and support to actually do a project rather then being told "uh do a project on anything bio related for this class and I cant help you because that would be unfair" and I have to slap together something original from public tools and data. Its also way easier to manage group work when everyone is given a set time and space to work every day rather then having to wrangle people after class.

If I wanted money id be a doctor or grind out fast food wagism when I turned 18 to be a regional manager. I'm fine making 50k-60k starting out as a researcher still that makes it not worth it for me to take out for debt for a 2-4 year PHD when PHDs only get you more pay once you enter senior positions.

Yeah that's my understanding too, a PhD only gets a pay bump at very high levels. Makes sense for intense engineering fields (semiconductors comes to mind) but a hard sell for most ventures.

There's nothing to elaborate, I just wanted to dunk on her.
Having said that, I've never heard any of the PhDs I know complain of this. There are many other things they complain about in the academic sphere, but the fact that you can do research in the field that interests you for a living is always presented as a positive, even if you do occasionally have to publish a lower quality paper to meet a quota. I don't think I've ever encountered a case where the author himself thinks that the work he is publishing is useless (though useless papers by themselves absolutely exist, I've encountered them first hand). From this I'm wondering if maybe that's just a "her" issue that she's projecting onto a wider group.

I never followed her either so it's hard for me to tell, I just watched some of her videos back when I was in undergrad I think and I didn't really like her character or attitude, I got the feeling that it's another one of those popsci shows where the host is extremely smug and is just this short
of calling you an r-slur to your face for not knowing the topic of the video you chose to learn about.
Then at some point I watched some other video of hers which I felt was either outright wrong or really misrepresented the topic (keep in mind that I was still in undergrad by that point so she very well could've been correct and it was me who's r-slurred. I'm just explaining where the negative perception came from.)
A more legitimate criticism that I've developed more recently of her however was when I noticed that she started putting out seemingly unrelated videos on viral topics like weed,
s, dopamine addiction, climate change etc. I don't really think that she's particularly qualified to speak on these things, and as such it kind of felt like some of her videos are just trend chasing for views, and at that point it kind of put into question other videos of hers that seem to be grand or sensationalist, like the one you posted- is she saying these things because she genuinely believes them or because she wants to drive engagement? Is she being sincere or overblowing things?
Now a very simple solution to this that I'm sure anyone will propose to me is to just watch some of those videos and perhaps formulate a more in-depth opinion on them. My answer to that is that I already deal with enough academic papers and poorly made graphs at work so I really can't muster the strength to do that in my free time lol.
