I think the beauty runaway effect makes sense, the counterargument I would make is that the most beautiful disconnected from survival success in the local environment runs the higher risk of dying out. That is, those with above average looks have a higher procreation and survival success rate than those with the most beauty in a survival based environment.

We don't see aesthetic only species out in the wild surviving very long unless the aesthetic criteria syncs up with survival criteria.
