And they would never ever ever admit it's because the Japanese built up more infrastructure there. I mean, how fricking hard is it to admit stuff like that, that the Japanese occupation was bad but they built a lot of useful stuff?
And the one thing they will never build a monument to even talk about is the American, Chinese, British, etc. troops who died to give them independence. It's really treacherous and disgraceful and doesn't improve their national honor.

Yeah, that's one of the biggest taboos there. You can never mention that their miraculous growth 1960s-1990s wasn't just a miracle. It was the Japanese offshoring a lot of their manufacturing. And the Japanese had got it from American companies first. Korea was a very poor country with a fairly well-educated population and it wasn't as corrupt as the Philippines. Foreign companies naturally flocked there. Modern Korean history has more holes in it than parts they're actually willing to talk about.
