I want to buy some land out west, in a wooded mountainous region. I am willing to spend about 100k but don't mind a modest mortgage as well. Where should I do this/what should I think about when doing this? Like can I just look on Zillow or what

Check the local laws on what you can do with your property. You don't want to have to deal with extra bs taxes or restrictions. Travel in person to see if you like the people. I did that with Colorado and found out I hated almost everyone there, saved me some money as I was thinking about having a house in the state.

Stay away from YouTube is my best advice.

Physically talk to people who've successfully done what you're aiming to do. They're more likely to give you the straight dope on what's realistic and what's not.
