I used that 40k home equity loan to pay off credit card debt. I then proceeded to rack up an additional 40k in credit card debt on top of that.

A lot of people on reddit shit on Dave Ramsey because he "ignores the math" but this is exactly why he doesn't initially suggest to people to do debt consolidation loans and adds a caveat to them that you're not accomplishing anything. $40k in credit cards paid off just means $40k worth of credit to use.
