Every bank account I've had, had OD protection as opt-in.
Why would you opt-in if you don't have money?

There's pretty much no reason unless you're living with irregular income and still want to buy necessities without the card declining at the counter.
Basically brokecels who want to avoid the public embarrassment of being broke by going into even deeper debt.

This is exactly why I'll never enable overdraft protection.
If someone somehow steals my debit card or otherwise is able to charge my checking account, at least I have plenty of money in my savings account to cover various expenses while I wait for a resolution.

poors opt in because they've already burned every potential source of credit and view overdrafts as "emergency" payday microloans
of course, poors are generally dumb af and their emergencies are actually frivolous spending
my mother was basically an american gypsy; i know all the tricks
