Every bank account I've had, had OD protection as opt-in.
Why would you opt-in if you don't have money?
Fricking poors.

This neighbor doesn't Murphy's Law-Maxx. If the option is there and free, fricking take it, even if you have fifty gorillion Floyd-bucks in the bank. You never know if you'll get hacked or something.

This is exactly why I'll never enable overdraft protection.
If someone somehow steals my debit card or otherwise is able to charge my checking account, at least I have plenty of money in my savings account to cover various expenses while I wait for a resolution.

Why would you opt in even if you had money?

There's pretty much no reason unless you're living with irregular income and still want to buy necessities without the card declining at the counter.
Basically brokecels who want to avoid the public embarrassment of being broke by going into even deeper debt.

poors opt in because they've already burned every potential source of credit and view overdrafts as "emergency" payday microloans
of course, poors are generally dumb af and their emergencies are actually frivolous spending
my mother was basically an american gypsy; i know all the tricks

Poorcels are genuinely incapable of this. They don't think "I have $200 and a bill coming up" they think "I have money" until "I don't have money"

I know you have money in the bank now, but how would you feel if you had a bill coming up and didn't have money in your account then?

Just don't agree to the opt-in for overdraft, and you will likely still get the benefits without the fees. For the first 1-2 transactions that take you negative. Banks never spend money on upgrading their systems for processing transactions.

I've never paid overdraft fees, I used this one simple trick called "only spend money you have"

They complain about overdraft fees but if the bank would have rejected the payment then they'd get slapped with payment returned fees from the other side.
Still, it is an insane amount. Assuming 320 million people (in reality it's less than this bc for the most part only adults will get charged these fees) that's just over $106/person.
I don't fault the banks here, it's just crazy that millions of people pay literally hundreds of dollars every year for overdraft fees, which are easy to avoid.

For most banks they charge you a nonsufficient funds fee if you don't have overdraft protection, often the same amount. Either way you can just not charge more than you have though.
