It's a predatory place that'll cash your paycheck for a fee. They're set up in low income neighborhoods where it's risky to open a bank. They kinda made sense in the day when you had to go to the bank and cash a check. With direct deposit and online banking there's really no reason to go to one unless you want to immediately cash your paycheck and buy totally legitimate merchandise with it.

No. They're not there because it's risky to open a bank. They're there because the bank will wait for the check to clear before giving you the money and these people need the money now and are willing to pay for that.

You're not thinking :marseyfranklin: poor enough. These people can't get bank accounts because they've burned the bank before :marseyskellington: (see the Chase ATM glitch).

Martin Luther King gave a speech in West Philadelphia in which he called for "Freedom Now," which is marked with a historical sign. I'm so sad that it closed, but right across the street from that sign used to be a check cashing place called "Currency Now."

How is that predatory? I get how loans can be predatory, but check cashing for a fee in place where bank won't open? How's that predatory?

They take a percentage of your check. Usually a few based on the check. Where they get you is they offer cash advances that are at like 350 - 500% interest. Anymore you can open a bank account from your phone and cash a check for free. You can even get high yield savings accounts that give you about 5% interest. You can even get high yield checking that pays about 1%.
