I broke the box spring. I jumped on the bed 
and the wooden slats broke. It was free anyway.
The manufacturer recommends I don't use a box frame. I will need a new frame to keep the original height of the bed. I want to get a cheap frame on Amazon that includes steel slats but I'm not sure if I should ham it up a little more. Any advice?

How would you "ham it up" exactly? "Box springs" aren't what they used to be. You're just paying for a metal or wooden frame surrounded by fabric whose main purpose is to elevate the bed, improve breatheability and distribute pressure, but they no longer need to have actual springs in them obviously.
Get the Amazon steel slat version. I have one and it works great.

As in getting something that actually looks nice. I'm not sure if I want some of those more fancier frames. Example:

Regardless, I was thinking of defaulting to one of those metal frames. I liked the elevation the box spring provided so I think I'll have to get one of those 18" frames (like the Amazon one you've mentioned, which I've eyed)
