Food honestly doesn't photograph well, that's why they have a whole sub-industry in advertising to make food look good in photos - they use motor oil instead of syrup for pancakes, the cheese is usually melted plastics, shaving cream instead of whipped cream, mashed potatoes instead of ice cream... there's a whole bunch of tricks.
