So anyway in typical fashion for someone who's personal life is falling apart, since August 2023 I've been hitting the gym, getting my diet right and also getting back into running.
I used to be athletic in my twenties, but giving birth to two kids, interspersed with a shoulder injury, COVID, career pressures, a transition, etc. I basically found it impossible to get any kind of long-term regime going.
I started off running 2 miles until I could do that in 15 minutes, then upped that to 5km (3.12 miles) until I could do that in 25 mins, then yesterday was feeling fit and did a practice run to the bridge I'm going to jump off when my affairs are order, which, there and back, is 10k (6.24 miles).
I thought if I could do it in an hour that would be great, and I was on pace until the last 1.5 miles where suddenly everything started hurting.
Legs obviously. But my shoulders were aching, I felt a burn in my pelvic floor muscles, and was basically shuffling along at a snail's pace.
Final time was 1:08.
So clearly I'm lacking endurance for longer runs, so I'm going to up my three 5ks per week to 7k, and keep on doing a 10k each weekend to build that endurance up. Once 10k is comfortable and I have a good pace, I might look at working up to a half marathon distance depending on how the suicide plans come along.
Going from a comfortable 5k and doubling it expecting it to remain comfortable was a bit premature but glad I attempted it.
Thanks for reading my blog.

Probably did my first 2 miles in September 2023. Not sure how long that was taking as my only goal was to complete 2 miles without stopping.
Starting tracking times in January when I got a Garmin watch and was taking ~20 mins:
Now running 10k at likely the same pace as I was 2 mile back in August but don't have the data.
Injured my knee in January which set me back a bit but got to 15 minutes in early March.
Started to do 5K in order to speed up my 2 miles, but then that started feeling easy and getting faster so I haven't done a 2 mile in a while to see if I'm faster.
I used to do running though so likely making quicker gains than if I were starting for the first time. A lot of it is pacing, breathing, rhythm and just getting through those first few miserable punishing runs at the start.

Those are great times. Hopefully something I can aspire to within a year and haven't missed the opportunity by being so old.

How old are you again? I'm late 20s and I'm still minutes behind my old high school times. Sucks being mogged by my 17 year old self

You should be proud of yourself for running a 10k at any pace in the current year

How old are you? 1h8m for a first 10k in over a decade is pretty good. Your 5k pace is decent, expect to do 10k in under 1h soon, just keep at it

38. I only started running further to make my shorter distances faster but the more I'm running the more distance I want to run so haven't attempted a faster 2 miles since the end of March.
Having a fitness watch really helps with seeing improvements even when mentally it doesn't feel like you're improving so credit that and decent trail running shoes with keeping me going.

At 38 that is already pretty ok, you're top 1% of people your age, congratulations. Something that's always fun is to take an afternoon to run the longest you can at your cruise pace, should give you an idea of the range/speeds you can aim to achieve in the short term (be mindful of injury though).

I had the regularly run 10k goal too. I got there a couple of times but then winter came and it got too cold to run and I got lazy and out of shape and then had to get back into it the next spring. Usually I get to doing about 7k every few days.

Yeah this has been me in almost every previous year as well. Difference this year was splashing out on some decent waterproof trail running shoes. No idea why I didn't do it before but yeah the worst thing was cold wet feet and then trying to dry my trainers, which would just make me give up around November and not pick up again until April.
