I'm getting made redundant and there's not much tying me down here so it could be fun to yolo it somewhere else . I'm Australian with a tech job so basically anywhere is open for me & visas are no real obstacle.
My top pics are obviously Sydney/Melbourne for mass of people in Australia, but by that principle New York or London would have even MORE people (and more glorious diversity ). I'm not interested in becoming a sexpat either, but romance language destinations are on the table as long as I can convince myself there won't be a drop in QoL (very dubious, this is also what keeps me from yoloing it to the UK). I haven't seriously considered the US, but we have a superior version of the H1B so if I was dilligent with applying for jobs I could get in without much visa frickery.
Obviously I have autism , but I'm decently well-socialised and active so like the nordics would be hellish I think. In particular I'm looking for r-slurred anecdotes like "oh THIS quarter of Berlin has no BIPOCs and is super trad if you go there your aryan blood will rise" to plot a little fantasy around.

IMHO New York and London both kind of suck unless you're way-way rich (depends what kind of techcel you are, but probably richer than that). I'd say check out Vienna or Berlin. Depends what you're into, if you want a summer beach vibe, Miami is a fun city with a decent tech scene.
I don't know anything about Oz, but the impression I have is that everything is stupid-expensive there for no good reason.

These are all true! In the big city I'd be above water but not cozy atm, and if I waited until my 30s to move move with more cash it would be too late . I have heard Berlin is quite swag but it doesn't feel attractive (France/Switzerland more appealing for no particular reason), Vienna and Miami are both good calls I might look into a bit more, do you have any particular vibes re: Vienna (I only know it as NWO HQ)?
It is true that Australia is stupid expensive, but it is also an incredible place to be middle-income because of the gibs and amazing amenity (I'm just breaching the top of that comfy zone) . We're having an economic downswing and social breakup session atm so it's a good time to go walkabout anyway.

This is a left-field suggestion, but if you like France, check out Annecy: beautiful little Haute-Savoie town near the Swiss border. It might not be bustle-enough to compete with Sydney/Melbourne, but it's got a gorgeous historic town center, lakeshore with beaches and sailing, and easy access to the mountains for skiing. I doubt there are many tech jobs in Annecy proper, but it's close enough you could commute to Geneva, especially for a hybrid job where you only had to go in a few days a week.

This is exactly the sort of weird suggestion I was hoping for, commute-to-switzerland seems like a strong option. Cheers

Are you outdoorsy? Are you wanting the nightlife? Lots of live music? What is it you want to do in your new city? I like mid sized US cities. They're kinda like a mid sized SUV. You can do a little bit of everything in them and theyre not super expensive.

Lapsed outdoorsy, not into nightlife/music but I like the daytime stuff that comes with that (here it's good cafes and bars which feel lived in). I think I could really fall into a strong religious/academic niche if it was pre-existing but I can go weeks without caring too much about that. I could probably tolerate a quite bland wagie life if there was more than zero fellow travellers and somewhere to post up after work (my biggest grievance in the current spot is everyone being older than me & settled down/partnered up). I do find serious suburbia intolerable tho.

I didn't like Miami :( I thought it was way too busy, horrendous traffic (made worse by half of the drivers being Cuban). It felt a bit claustrophobic to me, I was hoping for much more space.

I got to live like a local with some friends in Miami, they thought nothing of spending 3+ hours a day in the car doing errands and it was just traffic everywhere.
Also it's only going to get busier as more New Yorkers and immigrants move there, but the city can't expand because of the Everglades and the sea.

I get disconcerted enough walking through chinatown , I don't know how I'd go with a whole city! That said, I don't hate the malays I've met and there's probably a decently strong expat community around. If I was an asian wife guy it would be near the top of the list but that's not really my vibe so idk if I'd fit in.

Curious, what sets it apart from other midsized cities/how vigorous is the economy/how vibrant are the ethnics? My impression is that there's a large set of interchangeable cities and idk how to start sorting between them

As long as you pick the country/city correctly, English should be fine for most things, but you absolutely should still approach it as an opportunity to at least get surface-level conversational in another language
