So I've been watching a lot of youtube police bodycam videos and whenever anyone talks to the police or someone in a position of authority they always use this weird style of speaking

It's characterised by something like using whatever word has the most syllables for a particular thing plus frequent and incorrect use of 'self' words. e.g.:

Normal way: 'I saw someone talk to two women over there, then he crossed the street and talked to me.'
Talking to a policeman way: 'I saw an individual speaking with two females there and then he proceeded over the street and spoke with myself.'

Why do people do this. Is it police jargon emulation? An attempt at formal speech? :marseyconfused:

An attempt at formal speech?

Yeah basically. I once caught some dude breaking into my car at the liquor store but he booked it into the getaway car and they sped off, when I was talking to the cops after instead of describing the driver as a "fat black b-word" I automatically said she was a "portly black female" and made the cop laugh lol

It's to make sure the cops poor detectors don't accidentally go off and mistake :marseybikechainincident: you as a target

It's criminals trying to make themselves seem more sophisticated because they think it will alleviate suspicion
