It's always time to take your security into your own hands.
It has already been tested in court: the state has no duty to protect you.

common bro, the 2nd amendment isn't about personal defense, it's about defense against state tyranny.
if i wanted personal defense i'd get a 556, or just a handgun really.
762 is for dealing with body armor.
actually with a quick google search, looks like the new 6.8x51 might be even better, so i'd get it chambered for that

You're a noguns looking at buying a $4000 rifle with ammo that costs almost $1/ea for range ammo. You're going to shoot it once, think it's too loud and expensive, and sell it.
For the same price you could buy a honey badger with a silencer and plenty of ammo. Then you can shoot in your backyard without disturbing your neighbors

Just buy an AR. Fraction of the price and more practical. If you're concerned about body armor soft armor will fail to both 5.56 and 7.62. Hard armor is going to stop both. The most common Level IV hard armor is rated to 30-06 AP rounds., so the 6.8x51 will also not penetrate that hard armor.

Also, if you were in a truly apocalyptic situation, you'd be tripping over spare AR parts and 5.56 is probably the most plentiful ammo other then 9mm. They are reliable and good. Most people will not have body armor that can stop a 5.56 or .300blk.
Also you aren't a one man army so you probably shouldn't be thinking about fighting people who are likely way more geared and trained than you. This is to protect yourself and deter people.

Even if the plate stops the 556 or 762 you're gunna be laying on your back crying to Jesus thinking it cracked you.

i thot a major consideration for the move to 6.8x51 was body armor. that and reaching out a little farther.

Keep in mind they're also having to utilize special
ammunition that's gonna
be hard to find and expensive
as heck
Get something
simple
and reliable that's easy to maintain
An ar will do you fine. Get a sight, fore grip, light, and you're solid.
Don't be one of the guys making their gun 35lbs because they want every attachment ever thought
of.
The key more than anything
isn't the weapon
but learning to use it 1 and how to maneuver in a shootout 2. More important than how fancy
your gun is

in numerous secret
raids on Al-Quaeda, and I have over 300 confirmed kills. I am trained in gorilla
warfare and I'm the top sniper
in the entire US armed forces. You are nothing to me but just another target. I will wipe you the frick out with precision the likes of which has never
been seen before
on this Earth, mark my fricking
words. You think

network
of spies across the USA and your IP is being traced right
now so you better
prepare for the storm, maggot. The storm
that wipes out the pathetic
little
thing you call your life. You're fricking

hundred ways, and that's just with my bare hands. Not only am I extensively trained in unarmed combat, but I have access
to the entire arsenal of the United

Marine
Corps and I will use it to its full extent to wipe your miserable
butt off the face of the continent, you little
shit. If only you could have known what unholy retribution your little
"clever" comment

For one there's a couple issues. The way 6.8x51 mm outperfroms 7.62x51 is by generating insane levels of chamber pressure. It does this by using a hybrid stainless steel/brass case. To my knowledge you can't buy those hybrid case rounds in the civilian market. I don't know if you'll ever be able to. The army probably doesn't plan on using them much even if the M5 does get widely adopted, so there's a good chance they'll never hit the civilian market.
On to point 2. Military procurement is fricked and stupid. The NGSW requirement were built around the mountians of afghanistan. You are not going to be taking 600 yard shots at anything.

Also the ammo is fricking
heavy. You aren't carrying as much which is a big fricking
issue as a solo operator

The gun itself is fricking heavy. 9.2 lbs vs maybe 6.5 for an AR. Heck my ar10 only weights ~7.5 lbs. That may not sound like a lot but I promise it adds up.

I love my 20" barrels so I'm super picky about what goes on it since it's already like 10lbs loaded.
