If the government fails, other groups will immediately fill the power vacuum. Preppers are r-slurred because they think it's going to be anarchy forever more where they valiantly protect their food stores from scattered groups of unarmed raiders.
In reality it'll be you vs 100 armed men from the local warlord's group. If you're alone you'll be completely fricked, whatever the size your weapon stockpile.
A real survival strategy is to align yourself in advance with whatever group you predict is going to come out on top and then hope it works out that way.
