France's president, Emmanuel Macron, has said he intends to dissolve parliament and call snap legislative elections in the wake of his allies' crushing defeat to the far right National Rally (RN) in Sunday's European parliament elections.
what does this even mean it sounds like he's saying screw you guys. the i'm cancelling the government and doing what i want!
a snap election just means instead of waiting until the end of the election cycle for a vote, they're doing it now
it sounds like based on who was voted for in the EU parliament, he's triggering an election because it's clear the representation in the house doesn't match reality.
snap elections can also be done as a strategy, the tories in the UK did it a few years ago to get extra seats in parliament because they were polling strongly at the time. that could have also been a gamble and resulted in them losing seats, since virtually every member of parliament has to campaign to keep their seat
dissolving parliament just means parliament will no longer be in session until the election is completed, so no discussions on bills or anything until that is done.
The Fifth Republic constitution allows for the President to dissolve the National Assembly. That Constitution was installed by De Gaulle who wanted a strong presidency but the dissolution is pretty much a nuclear option for presidents (last resort if the Assembly and the government can't reach an agreement on major issues like the Assembly constantly refusing confidence to the Prime Minister or Cabinet appointed by the President) as it can backfire horribly if the President's party/coalition loses.

Petain deserved to die as a traitor, but I understand De Gaulle commutated the sentence out of respect for the former's services during WW1.

If you respect democracy, it's actually WAY WAY WAY better than having a lame-duck session of Congress in USA, for example.

Not if the government loses their majority though, in that case it creates an even bigger gridlock
