He's just ensuring that he (and the Democrats) can wash their hands clean when someone attempts to assassinate Trump again.
The Democratic rhetoric was "threat to democracy", "needs to be stopped at all costs", etc. for so long that they only changed it after the 1st attempt (even though it was clearly fake!).
If I were him I'd be glad the Dems got fricked after they ousted me like that.
