i have sympathy for people who worked in the age of pensions and workplace stock options. people who didn't have the opportunity to open a 401k for the majority of their working career, i can understand the need. But if you were born after the mid-eighties I'm not sure what excuse you can have. I have co-workers nearly two decades older than me who raid their 401ks to buy guns and trucks, and I have no interest in being the sucker who subsidizes their government neetbux in old age only to be turned away myself when this bullshit ponzi scheme falls through.

Sure but those people exist and without social security they'll just be a bunch of starving/dying old people littering the streets, which is why it was created in the first place.
It's obviously a progressive tax due to the bend points but it does have a cap (unlike any other tax). It's not a huge part of anybody's expenses due to the flat and capped nature of the tax and also nobody's getting rich off it since the payout is effectively capped as well (tbh after you're past the second bend point you don't get much more from it).
