The book itself is not even that crazy but the title comes from supposedly redacted Quranic verses which involved Mohammed trying to convince some polytheists to join Islam where he said their gods were cool. The idea was that he was inspired by Satan to utter such heresy.
It's became a huge sore spot for Muslims since the book lead to tons of people around the world learning about such a rumor which ostensibly made Mohammed look unreliable and susceptible to the devil.
