I'd run him over with the trolley because he's a nihilist and nihilists are wasted existence.

It's going to a death camp, you'd actually be adding a few seconds to their lives.

Now 5 people who let themselves get tied up on the tracks live and reproduce instead of 1. :marseydarwin:

It's almost pedantic to include "non trivial" in the question.

Okay, I actually don’t know this one. If the value f(z), f(f(z)), etc doesn’t diverge to infinity, then that point is in the Mandelbrot set.

But the cardinality of the Mandelbrot set is not finite, it’s 2 aleph null, isn’t it? It’s a subset of R2.

So therefore if every complex, every real, and every rational has someone tied to the tracks, infinitely many people die, right?

If people have a finite area then the Mandelbrot set is itself the answer, I just assumed that every single point was a person.

The Mandelbrot set in the picture is misleading because it consists of points c admitting any attracting periodic point.

In this problem we begin with 0 and find all points c which admit 0 as a (not-necessarily attracting) periodic point. In other words, 'c' should be a root of one of the polynomials

0^2 + c;

(0^2+ c)^2 +c = c^2+c;

((0^2 + c)^2 + c)^2 + c = c^4 + 2*c^3 + c^2 + c;

etc. The shape formed by all such points "c" is usually called a Douady rabbit.

If I am a participant in a trolley problem, I want to be clear that you have my permission to kill as many people as it takes for the trolley to not hit me. A million, two million, five million, all the same to me.
