I understand it’s an important historical event but it seems like it was just made up and everyone went along with it because they want a day off. I had never even heard of it before a few years ago. Big yikes, I know. I’m working on addressing my ignorance.

My pet theory is that they made Juneteenth a recognized holiday so that a certain group of rainbow enthusiasts don’t get to have the whole month to themselves

Also June 19th was only when slaves in Texas found out they were freed by the Emancipation Proclamation. The Emacipation Proclamation didnt free all the slaves, just the ones in confederate stated. Several border states that allied with the north were able to keep practicing slavery up until the 13th Amendment was ratified iirc. If they went by that date it would be sometime in mid december and would conflict with hanakah/christmas.
