I understand it’s an important historical event but it seems like it was just made up and everyone went along with it because they want a day off. I had never even heard of it before a few years ago. Big yikes, I know. I’m working on addressing my ignorance.

It was celebrated in some states for like 30-50 yrs after the Civil War, mostly by Southern black people, and then kind of dwindled away until 2020. They say some people were still celebrating it continously but I lived in Atlanta and never saw anything about it.
