because english is a germanic language using a latin alphabet, so letters don't match their sounds :marseyfluffy:

the great thing about english is that a lot of words can vary in pronunciation

if you say good or wood so it rhymes with mood or food, everyone will still understand you perfectly

They rhyme in some dialects:

The FOOT–GOOSE merger is a phenomenon in Scottish English, Northern Irish English, Malaysian English, and Singapore English,[21][full citation needed] in which the modern English phonemes /ʊ/ and /uː/ have merged into a single phoneme. As a result, word pairs like look and Luke are homophones, plus good and food and foot and boot rhyme.

They used to. The Anglo Saxon (Old English) 'Gōd' and 'Mōd' did rhyme.

In the middle ages there was a thing called the Great Vowel Shift when pronunciation of many vowel sounds changed for some reason. Nobody knows why because English was not commonly written down at the time as the Bongs were ruled by French speaking kings.
