This isn't correct. The portals are not wormholes. Things travel through wormholes, so they need momentum and cross a distance within. This does not happen with a portal (as far as I can tell from playing the game).

Let's say the portal stopped half way through the box? Would it still fly through? Would it get cut in half? Or would it retain it's momentum and sit on the platform.

What if the portal kept going, stopping 10 feet below the platform with the box? Would the stand, platform, and box all go flying?

Jump in the discussion.

No email address required.

The momentum of the object entering the portal while it was in motion would be retained for the portion that went through the portal

Jump in the discussion.

No email address required.

The portal isn't a thing, it's a hole. It does not have momentum (a wormhole would, however).

The hole passes over the object. There's no momentum to transfer.

It you want to get all relative; How does the momentum of the box change relative to the platform it is sitting on?

:#marseyreading:

Jump in the discussion.

No email address required.

But the object has momentum when transiting the portal because it has relative velocity to the portal entrance. Otherwise you couldn't pass through a portal since you must be definition carry momentum through the portal since it has zero space in which to generate any force

Jump in the discussion.

No email address required.

The issue here is the nature of portals... And because portals are not real, we're arguing over who shaves the barber but whatever.

Yes, relative to the moving portal, the box would be moving. But relative to everything else, it wouldn't.

Let's say the portal traveled past the box and 2' past the platform the box was sitting on. Would the box jump off the platform? No because the platform and the box would have the same momentum.

Think of it this way: The amount of momentum imparted to the box transiting the portal would depend on the momentum of the portal. But how would you even calc that if the portal (being a hole in space) would have no mass?

Jump in the discussion.

I choose to think of it as someone hitting you over the head with an empty doorframe: if that door frame is traveling at 1000 mph, it doesn't cause you to shoot into the sky when it hits the ground around your feet.

The answer is either A, or neither because the game doesn't allow for moving portals. But it is never B.

The entrance and exit of the doorframe are moving at the same speed. If the entrance and exit of the doorframe could move at different speeds, like the portals in the question are, you could put the exit of the doorframe on the ground and slam the entrance over someone to make them fly into the air

No, the momentum would transfer into the box, and the section of box through the portal would then transfer any momentum into the rest of the box. The portal has no mass but doesn't create or destroy momentum, merely transferring it though the hole based on the relative motion of the objects entering the portal to the portal itself

The box would jump off the platform as soon as the portal stopped. If the orange portal is moving at 10 m/s, the box and pillar are emerging from the blue portal at 10 m/s. As long as the orange portal keeps moving they stay together, but as soon as it stops the cube goes flying because the base of the pedestal holds the top in place while the cube is free to continue moving.

Jump in the discussion.

No email address required.

Work out the equations. Where would the momentum come from to transfer to the box? Would it come from the force of moving the portal? Would that force change by the mass of the thing moving through the portal? I.e. The portal is moving through the air (with a little back force from the air hitting the air on the other side) hits a tungsten block. The force needed to push the portal would increase to give the tungsten block the momentum to fly off the platform. This does not appear to happen...

Jump in the discussion.

No email address required.

There is a clear answer.

Velocity is relative -- the portal having velocity is the same as the cube having velocity. That's Physics A in high school, and even if you missed that back then you should've learned that studying Special Relativity.

In the game momentum is conserved.

Jump in the discussion.

The portal having velocity doesn't mean the cube has velocity. The portal's velocity could influence either the cube's exit velocity or the cube's "spawn rate" out the other portal.

What momentum? What does the portal weigh? If kinetic energy is conserved, what is the kinetic energy of the portal? Clearly not 0.5* (mass of the universe) * v^2 ? But also why would it be 0.5 * (mass of the cube) * v^2 ?

The difference is it's a connection to another space.

Imagine if you were in a car going 20mph south and teleported into a car going 20mph north. You'd be moving relatively 40mph opposite the car's velocity and (probably?) die due to the acceleration once you hit it

So when you move at velocity A in space 'red' and are 'relatively' motionless (inertia) but instantly enter a space moving at relative velocity B in space 'blue', you are truly moving at velocity (B - A) in space 'blue'

No force is applied to you but you still would fly out. Inertia & reference frames.

If the portal approaches the person you can imagine it as a physical space approaching him. The physical space has a relative velocity of x mph, if you enter it you will be moving at x mph once you enter it. But that's relying on Sci-Fi physics which is bullshit anyway. :marseyshrug:

So as we know:

F (force) = m (mass) * a (acceleration)

You can further break this down with

F = Fx (force in the x direction) + Fy (force in the y direction) + Fz (force in the z direction) = max + may + m*az

So we can assume that the portal itself apply no force as the portal has no mass

F=0*a = 0

So the cube would be instantly brought to its new position with no prior forces being applied to it besides force of gravity and normal force.

We will also presume that the cube is unable to go back through the portal and the the triangle it is on is a right triangle

So gravity is applying Fy = m * 32.2 ft/s

Normal force (essentialy the force that pushes equally and oppositely to gravity) is being applied at from an angled plane therefore

F = Fy + Fx = m * asin(45) + m * axcos(45)

This shows that there is a minimal force applied in the X direction.

Assuming this Force in the x direction is strong enough to overcomes friction, it would prove that

You can see from playing the game that MOMENTUM IS CONSERVED.

If you think momentum shouldn't be conserved in this one special case, you have to posit that earth (or wherever the game takes place) is the universal prime frame of reference. But that obviously doesn't make sense, because earth is a non-inertial frame of reference.

Because portals and teleportation isn't real, the way to approach this problem is to choose the solution that breaks the least amount of physics/logic.

Answer A breaks everything, nothing would work because you've arbitrarily labeled a frame of reference as universal. Newton physics wouldn't even make sense in this universe.

Answer B only requires that these magic portals act consistently.

What is the mass of the portal?

Jump in the discussion.

No email address required.

The mass of the portal doesn't matter. The cube has mass that is moving on orange side. What is the mass of a train doorway

Jump in the discussion.

No email address required.

The cube isn't moving.

Jump in the discussion.

No email address required.

It is on orange side

Jump in the discussion.

No email address required.

It is not. The portal isn't a physical object, it can't carry momentum even if whatever it's attached to is moving.

Jump in the discussion.

No email address required.

that's why portals like that are not possible in our universe

Jump in the discussion.

No email address required.

Yes, hence why it's called the portal paradox.

If you taped a large sheet of paper over blue would it break? What force breaks it? Would that paper alone stop the piston?

the cube is moving relative to 99.999999% of all things in the universe, including the one thing that matters here: the orange portal.

What happens to your butt if you in this situation? Does block hit your butt real fast? If it hit your butt does it push you? How can it hit your butt real fast if it also plop?

(edit misinterpret)

Neither of you are technically moving, but the box is being forced into your space by the force propelling the moving platform the portal is bound to. You'll be pushed by the inertia of the platform, not the box or portal

Yeah i did that, too. Fast-travelled and it spawned me inside the train. Didn't hurt me at all.

Check. Mate.

Kinetic energy from the platform slamming into the platform that the cube stands on

Jump in the discussion.

No email address required.

What kinetic energy? The portal does not exert energy :marseyreactor:

Jump in the discussion.

No email address required.

No but the platform does. Say you have a table with drinks and you slam the table the drinks jump up due the energy into the table

Jump in the discussion.

No email address required.

That's not what's happening :marseyfsjal:

Jump in the discussion.

No email address required.

Yes it does. Remember the cube is connected to the platform until the impact

Jump in the discussion.

No email address required.

No it isn't, it's instantly transported and the platform ceases to exist upon contact

Jump in the discussion.

No email address required.

No. It's a wormhole meaning it is connected

Jump in the discussion.

The cube is separate as is the platform it rests upon.

Option C: The portal would close and the moving brush would squish the cube against the other one making rapid metallic noises until it glitches through one of them :marseyhalflife:

You literally attach a portal to a moving surface in portal2

Jump in the discussion.

No email address required.

Not once did it ever allow portals to move normal to their attached surface.

Jump in the discussion.

Oh so when you said "portals can't be attached to moving surfaces" you actually meant something different and I'm an idiot for not realizing that.

Those aren't portals

Jump in the discussion.

but "movement" means nothing. Moving relative to what?

Unless you mean, portals can't move relative to each other once they're both placed (which has meaning).

This was proven demonstrably false by the bideo game bortal, TWICE.

Factcheck: This claim hurts trans lives.

If the portal was static and the cube was moving the answer would be the same.
