Huh
I'ma need a bigger bag for the cohort
Tryna make a millionaire out of slum dogs
Bet that, head crack, blunt force
Cozy with the east Africans up north
Where seven make a three, turn a ten by law
Crescent moon wink, when I blinked it was gone
Left the crib, smacked, no sheath on the sword
Made it by the skin of my teeth, thank God
'03, momma rockin' Liz Claiborne
Had her stressin' up the wall playin' Mary J. songs
Rainy day came, couldn't rinse the stains off
Long way to go, we already came far
Story stayed the same, it was never madе up
Threw me loose changе, look at what I made of it
When the mood change, I'ma poker-face 'em
It's a new day, who got all the aces?
Who be foldin' late? Who know when to play dead?
Who sit up straight when the roof caved in?
Had a full plate, you ain't wanna split it
Tell it to you straight, you ain't wanna listen
Cup runneth over the brim
Bust open, there's no closin' the lid
Drumroll, here go my lil' entrance
Gung ho, I'm the one that go get it
Five O's on me like the Olympics
Pure gold, somethin' told me, "Don't mix it"
Caught a feelin', momma had me out Temple
Not religious, we was really out Philly
Livin' on the fly tryna wing it
We got us a fire to rekindle
Redirect the fight where it's meant for
Triumph over plight and immense loss
Ride alone at night, I get clear thoughts
Caught a couple slights and I veered off
Saw another height, had my ears poppin'
Walked outside, it was still gorgeous
Sharp incisors reveal slowly
In the dark inside, we was real hungry
On a seven of the five, we was real hungry
Uh, niggas still drummin'
Foot shook ground when I stepped on it
Didn't look back when I broke soil
'Cause every time I did it would hurt more
In the dark inside, we was real hungry
On a seven of the five, we was real hungry
And I didn't look back when I broke soil
'Cause every time I did it would hurt more
Alright
Yessir, this nigga spittin'

This isn't correct. The portals are not wormholes. Things travel through wormholes, so they need momentum and cross a distance within. This does not happen with a portal (as far as I can tell from playing the game).
Let's say the portal stopped half way through the box? Would it still fly through? Would it get cut in half? Or would it retain it's momentum and sit on the platform.
What if the portal kept going, stopping 10 feet below the platform with the box? Would the stand, platform, and box all go flying?
Jump in the discussion.
No email address required.
The momentum of the object entering the portal while it was in motion would be retained for the portion that went through the portal
Jump in the discussion.
No email address required.
The portal isn't a thing, it's a hole. It does not have momentum (a wormhole would, however).
The hole passes over the object. There's no momentum to transfer.
It you want to get all relative; How does the momentum of the box change relative to the platform it is sitting on?
Jump in the discussion.
No email address required.
But the object has momentum when transiting the portal because it has relative velocity to the portal entrance. Otherwise you couldn't pass through a portal since you must be definition carry momentum through the portal since it has zero space in which to generate any force
Jump in the discussion.
No email address required.
The issue here is the nature of portals... And because portals are not real, we're arguing over who shaves the barber but whatever.
Yes, relative to the moving portal, the box would be moving. But relative to everything else, it wouldn't.
Let's say the portal traveled past the box and 2' past the platform the box was sitting on. Would the box jump off the platform? No because the platform and the box would have the same momentum.
Think of it this way: The amount of momentum imparted to the box transiting the portal would depend on the momentum of the portal. But how would you even calc that if the portal (being a hole in space) would have no mass?
Jump in the discussion.

I choose to think of it as someone hitting you over the head with an empty doorframe: if that door frame is traveling at 1000 mph, it doesn't cause you to shoot into the sky when it hits the ground around your feet.
The answer is either A, or neither because the game doesn't allow for moving portals. But it is never B.

The entrance and exit of the doorframe are moving at the same speed. If the entrance and exit of the doorframe could move at different speeds, like the portals in the question are, you could put the exit of the doorframe on the ground and slam the entrance over someone to make them fly into the air

Good job, only issue is a door frame absorbs energy and stops or lowers the velocity of the box’s vector of motion. I do agree w you but the example is slightly flawed.

No, the momentum would transfer into the box, and the section of box through the portal would then transfer any momentum into the rest of the box. The portal has no mass but doesn't create or destroy momentum, merely transferring it though the hole based on the relative motion of the objects entering the portal to the portal itself

If it has no mass, it has no momentum. What would there be to transfer?

The box would jump off the platform as soon as the portal stopped. If the orange portal is moving at 10 m/s, the box and pillar are emerging from the blue portal at 10 m/s. As long as the orange portal keeps moving they stay together, but as soon as it stops the cube goes flying because the base of the pedestal holds the top in place while the cube is free to continue moving.
Jump in the discussion.
No email address required.
Work out the equations. Where would the momentum come from to transfer to the box? Would it come from the force of moving the portal? Would that force change by the mass of the thing moving through the portal? I.e. The portal is moving through the air (with a little back force from the air hitting the air on the other side) hits a tungsten block. The force needed to push the portal would increase to give the tungsten block the momentum to fly off the platform. This does not appear to happen...

wormholes, if they exist, would simply be non-trivial geometry. such wormholes would not have two sides, and if they had two side (in whatever idiotic sense) those sides couldn't be pushed around by mechanical contraptions.

I have. Does the portal velocity influence the cube exit velocity or the cube “spawn” time? There’s no clear answer.
Jump in the discussion.
No email address required.
There is a clear answer.
Velocity is relative -- the portal having velocity is the same as the cube having velocity. That's Physics A in high school, and even if you missed that back then you should've learned that studying Special Relativity.
In the game momentum is conserved.
Jump in the discussion.
No email address required.
The portal having velocity doesn't mean the cube has velocity. The portal's velocity could influence either the cube's exit velocity or the cube's "spawn rate" out the other portal.
What momentum? What does the portal weigh? If kinetic energy is conserved, what is the kinetic energy of the portal? Clearly not 0.5* (mass of the universe) * v^2 ? But also why would it be 0.5 * (mass of the cube) * v^2 ?

There is nothing “behind” the portal because the portals themselves are a connection of two arbitrary locations. You can move the portals around without destroying the universe
Jump in the discussion.

The portal is a door. Behind the door lies the space you can enter. If the door approaches you at a certain speed, then the space behind the door also approaches you at the same speed. In case of the portal that space is the whole universe.

The difference is it's a connection to another space.
Imagine if you were in a car going 20mph south and teleported into a car going 20mph north. You'd be moving relatively 40mph opposite the car's velocity and (probably?) die due to the acceleration once you hit it
So when you move at velocity A in space 'red' and are 'relatively' motionless (inertia) but instantly enter a space moving at relative velocity B in space 'blue', you are truly moving at velocity (B - A) in space 'blue'
No force is applied to you but you still would fly out. Inertia & reference frames.
If the portal approaches the person you can imagine it as a physical space approaching him. The physical space has a relative velocity of x mph, if you enter it you will be moving at x mph once you enter it. But that's relying on Sci-Fi physics which is bullshit anyway.

You move forward (direction irrelevant) into the portal, you come out the portal forward.

The difference is that the top and bottom of the hula hoop are moving at the same speed. suffice to say that the closess thing to portals that is physically possible would be wormholes. but wormholes aren't really like portals, they're nontrivial spacetime geometry.
this illustration shows a 2D universe with a non-trivial geometry (the "wormhole"), embedded in 3D space for sake of visualization.
it's impossible to embed a 3-dimensional wormhole-like geometry in 3D space, so there's no equivalent easy way to visualize a hypothetical wormhole of our 3d universe.

So as we know:
F (force) = m (mass) * a (acceleration)
You can further break this down with
F = Fx (force in the x direction) + Fy (force in the y direction) + Fz (force in the z direction) = max + may + m*az
So we can assume that the portal itself apply no force as the portal has no mass
F=0*a = 0
So the cube would be instantly brought to its new position with no prior forces being applied to it besides force of gravity and normal force.
We will also presume that the cube is unable to go back through the portal and the the triangle it is on is a right triangle
So gravity is applying Fy = m * 32.2 ft/s
Normal force (essentialy the force that pushes equally and oppositely to gravity) is being applied at from an angled plane therefore
F = Fy + Fx = m * asin(45) + m * axcos(45)
This shows that there is a minimal force applied in the X direction.
Assuming this Force in the x direction is strong enough to overcomes friction, it would prove that
a) A is the closet to correct answer
b) that you are an r-slur

You can see from playing the game that MOMENTUM IS CONSERVED.
If you think momentum shouldn't be conserved in this one special case, you have to posit that earth (or wherever the game takes place) is the universal prime frame of reference. But that obviously doesn't make sense, because earth is a non-inertial frame of reference.
Because portals and teleportation isn't real, the way to approach this problem is to choose the solution that breaks the least amount of physics/logic.
Answer A breaks everything, nothing would work because you've arbitrarily labeled a frame of reference as universal. Newton physics wouldn't even make sense in this universe.
Answer B only requires that these magic portals act consistently.

You are not accelerating nothing is pushing on you. Imagine a hula hoop. On one side is the triangle the other side is the platform. If you stand and the hula hoop falls on you, you do not accelerate to the other side of the hula hoop.
There is no momentum, no velocity nor change in velocity
the portal works fine you’re just r-slurred

the entire 'world' on the other side of the portal is moving relative to the cube
once inside, that's still the case, but from the perspective of the world there it's the cube that's moving
if you looked into that portal from the other side the cube would appear to be slamming up into it
Jump in the discussion.

It’s not about perspective it’s about force application which besides gravity, friction and normal force there is none
Jump in the discussion.
No email address required.
the force is being applied to the 'world' inside the portal that's what's accelerating
the cube is technically just sitting there and then it is transported into a world that's moving around it
Jump in the discussion.
No email address required.
That makes no sense and it is just a restructuring of where point A and B which would not affect the cube

I think you might be r-slurred. Speed, acceleration, and potential energy all rely on frame of reference.

Lol wrong tard. Say even if the portal does not apply any force. But the object attached to the portal does.
So when the object goes down and hits the platform it would send energy down into the object below. Since the cube is on the object below it would receive energy from the impact and go upwards

The difference is that you are moving inside the train, in the portal picture neither the cube nor the platform it is on is moving which makes the train point fricking r-slurred.

What is the mass of the portal?
Jump in the discussion.

The mass of the portal doesn't matter. The cube has mass that is moving on orange side. What is the mass of a train doorway

It is not. The portal isn't a physical object, it can't carry momentum even if whatever it's attached to is moving.

Neither of you are technically moving, but the box is being forced into your space by the force propelling the moving platform the portal is bound to. You'll be pushed by the inertia of the platform, not the box or portal

Kinetic energy from the platform slamming into the platform that the cube stands on

No but the platform does. Say you have a table with drinks and you slam the table the drinks jump up due the energy into the table

Unless you mean, portals can't move relative to each other once they're both placed (which has meaning).
