Great, now I officially am a failure, rather than just feeling like one.

You always have been one :!marseycool:

You're no failure. Owning a house isn't all it's cracked up to be. The generations before us tried to convince us that it's all we'd need, but it isn't.

True rentoid coping hours here :!marseysmug2:

Yeah why do people obsess over this? I don't understand

The mind of a rentoid cannot comprehend the joys of homeownership :marseylaugh:

It's a built in thing from our parents. There's this false idea that “success” is defined as having a nuclear family and a split level single family home

This guy is right! Success is actually having a 50 square foot apartment in the middle of downtown with one window and exposed brick walls! :!soyjakanimeglasses:

I don't think I ever heard that but my dad does live in his parents attic at 60 and he's cool with that haha

With a dad like that, it was over before it even began for this Redditor :!marseydoomer:

I will die on the hill that stocks offer better returns than a mortgage on a single family housing unit in a high mortgage rate environment but thats a convo for another day

As an investment play alone this is true, butt you have to consider that you dont live in your stock portfolio. You have to live somehwere, either youre paying rent(someone elses mortgage) or your paying your own and you have equity in the home that is yours.

Yes exactly, mixing up consumption and investment decisions is r-slurred. You have different interests in those areas. While owning has advantages, relying on your house as a major part of your portfolio is a downside of home ownership.

You have $1000

You can put $500 to rent and $500 in stocks

Or $750 in mortgage (half of which you keep because it turns into equity) and $250 in stocks.

Without running the numbers it's not clear.

What is clear is that your mortgage will always be $750 (half of which you keep) but your rent can easily climb to $750 in two years (none of which you keep)

Exactly. 1 house is a pretty sound financial decision, butt investing beyond that in real estate is where its not a great investment even if you look past the hassles of being a landlord/home flipper.

If you have a paid off house it's very hard to become homeless when disaster befalls you

You should always expect to lose all of your liquid assets at some point in the next five years

Darn I always think of people who have parents who are losers and don't live in a real house of their own.

Like I'm the one who gets to be the loser, not my dad.

My parents fumbled the bag and live in a much smaller house than they used to, I feel bad for them.

Also paternal step-grandpa is bequeathing his investments to me instead of his son

The benefits of homeownership cant be overstated

but what if I invest in a moldy, termite-sacked piece of shit?

Keep yourself safe?
