Sad but true. Combination of increased social isolation/parasocial relationships. Relatedly, more people feel somewhat dead inside, and it's hard to feel music under those conditions.
Also somewhat ironically the increased accessibility of music has coincided with a collapse of any organic artist popularity. My theory is that small labels (which have been wiped out) were really what allowed any organic growth to occur. That and (once again ironically) CDs and music stores.
