National emblem: India rejects criticism over ‘snarling’ lion statue - BBC News

https://www.bbc.com/news/world-asia-india-62131457

The 6.5m (21ft 3in)-tall cast shows four Asiatic lions mounted back-to-back on a circular disc.

Critics say the new lions look "ferocious" and stray from their original depiction.

Opposition leaders have also hit out at the government, saying that the new avatar of the emblem - adapted from the Lion Capital of Ashoka, a sculpture that was atop one of the several pillars erected by Emperor Ashoka during his reign in 250BC - was a "brazen insult to India's national symbol".

Social media users pointed out that the demeanour of the lions in the new cast differed significantly from the original depiction and that instead of looking "benevolent and regal", they now "snarled".

That’s the whole issue, the depiction of the symbol is too heavy on angry power. More so than the original without doubt thanks to the enlarged canines. The lion motif is common around the world but for example look at how the British used it (Trafalgar Square). Does that look angry to you? It depicts strength without inspiring fear in those that look upon it as a symbol of those who rule over them. I find the design choices of this govt shitty if you actually go into how the lion motif is used across history you will find it’s only dictators compensating for personal shortcomings who like to use “angrier versions” of the lion motif. Those guys also tend to like to build large statues.

:marseyeyeroll:

Lions are such peaceful animals. They are like dogs, they come to you wagging their tails to eat the treat out of your hand. They represent calm and peace. The Modi govt misrepresented the nature of a lion on the statue just to suit the agenda of the political party. This is a shameful act and requires immediate attention of the entire country!

:marseyxd:

The new one looks more cool, more aggressive.

Why stop at being aggressive?? We should just go for something that is scary. Why not have a Cobra with it's fangs out? It would be a wasted effort if we don't pee in our pants everytime we see it.

:marseyseethe:

that's the point. modern democracies should not aim to portray that they are "aggressive."

:marseycuck:

From an India that portrayed itself as benevolent and peace-loving (in line with Gandhi's ideals) to an India that likes to pretend it is ferocious.

:marseyhope: :marseyhope:

This is similar to a semi-literate person having a wall of books behind him where he wants to show off to the world that he has "read" these books and is smart. This immature projection of power is laughable. And now, I have to accept it because I am being forced to accept this imagery.
