What is ChromeOS

ChromeOS is a linux distro based of gentoo linux. ChromeOS has been developed by google for their device the chromebook. The chromebook is an extremely watered down notebook which main purpose is to be used in education and by wagies. Chromebooks are cheap and easy to use and that is what makes it so appealing. What makes it so easy to use is ChromeOS. The idea is to have an entire OS based around the browser and other commonly used google products, this will also secure that all future children will listen to the future believed to be lord and savior of humanity, alphabet. Unless people start using firefox. Which actually is becoming a suck up for google with its dependence on google services so- . Unimportant. Like I said before since ChromeOS isn't supposed to be used for anything that isn't being a slave to google it can become very complicated very quickly to use it for other purposes.

Chapter 1, Dev mode

You will get nowhere with your chromebook unless you enable developer mode, it should be fairly easy to do. You will need to backup all locally stored data since to enable developer mode you shall need to powerwash it! Press ESC + F3, also known as the refresh button. + The power button. This shall present a screen. It's a warning, ignore, just press CTRL+D. This may be different on other chromebook models, but just yandex some information.

Chapter 2, Introduction to crosh and other nonsense

So you may ask what changed, well now you're capable of installing android apps outside of the app store capable to make firmware changes and use the advanced settings! Thanks alphabet for letting me use the device! Though now everytime you startup you will be greeted by a welcoming white warning screen, you can unwhite it because ew white with a Mr chromebox script but im getting ahead of myself; Just ctrl+d past it. It does make a looud beep when unattended and on the screen. Something which I want to get out of the way is that virtualization is gay. So I won't cover crostini nor any other form of virtualization. Well do Ctrl + Alt + T this should open a crosh window. This is the equivlant of your linux terminal. Expect limited since you still haven't done what I want you to do.

Before you continue, set a root passwd. good opsecc is best opsecc!

sudo passwd root

Chapter 3, I HATE CHROMEOS!

Good news! You can leave it! There are two ways get a chroot or a seperate OS, I won't cover replacing ChromeOS since that's not something I should be preaching.

Chroot way: You may wonder, what is a chroot. Well keep wondering, it's just os in os. All you should know there is a script which makes an accesible chroot for you with DE and all, https://github.com/dnschneid/crouton , it works great :3. Issues being there are many issues. OSes aren't made to be used in other OSes. Installing snap is basiclly impossible (not that you should want snap) sound is a pain to setup depending on your hardware and the storage is limiting! but if you just want to play the best video game ever made (half life 2 deathmatch) it should be fine.

How 2:

1. Download this file in your chrome browser: https://goo.gl/fd3zc

2. I JUST REMEMBERED! I never explained crosh and how to execute shell commands. Well type in shell in your crosh window and you can start using shell commands :3.

2. Run this command:  sudo install -Dt /usr/local/bin -m 755 ~/Downloads/crouton

3. Well select your poison, sudo crouton -r list

4. Install your poison! sudo crouton -t xfce-desktop -r bullseye

Seperate storage device and firmware mods!: This is the better option but will cost money, or atleast an SD card. You need an sd card or usb and another usb or sd, This method is loading an OS present on an SD and using that as your OS for your chromebook, storage which likely is slow but this method gives you the opportunity to use full hardware and install any hardware supporting OS!

how 2, little long and boring though.

1. Run this in crosh shell, dont question it just do it. `cd; curl -LO http://mrchromebox.tech/firmware-util.sh

sudo install -Dt /usr/local/bin -m 755 http://firmware-util.sh

sudo http://firmware-util.sh`

Okay you installed mrchromebok firmware mod script. I have no idea how it works. Some ChromeOS quirk i should mention is that you can only execute scripts in /usr/local!. You can change this with, will keep it secret for a later chapter ;3

2. okay anyway choose option 1.

3. when its finished reboot, you can force reboot with F3 + Powerbutton, fun fact.

4. At your login screen do CTRL + ALT + F2 or F3 or F4. Also known as -> key. There you login as chronos and use your set password. There you will need to type in this command sudo crossystem dev_boot_usb=1 dev_boot_legacy=1 This should return an error, type the accurate command which was given in the error!

5. MAGIC IS DONE OH MY GAWD.

6. Reboot chromebook.

7. NOW INSTEAD OF JUST CTRL + D PAST WARN SCREEN PRESS CTRL + L here you shall get 2 options Tianocore or U-boot. use tianocore. EXPLOSION SOUND EFFECT! you now have a bios to run the OS you have on your SD, I can give a guide on installing linux on an sd card on a chromebook, but thats stupid. I use freebsd. which is 100x better!

Chapter 4, kill root

Don't be scared of the title we won't kill anyone! We shall kill the Read-Write protection alphabet has put in place. This will be required for Chap 5 emerging from the ashes!

You cant just sudo -i and change things, on the topic of root, use sudo -i in shell crosh to be root and do root things. Well time to kill root.

1. running very cool script provided to us in system sudo /usr/share/vboot/bin/http://make_dev_ssd.sh --remove_rootfs_verification this can and likely will return an error, copy paste the command given by the error!

2. remount root mount -o remount,rw / you can also add ,exec to end that annoying execute protection.

3. reboot!

4. we destroyed the biggoted wall seperating us and /!

Chap 5 emerging from the ashes!

Well the revelations in chapter 0 finally paid off! Because ChromeOS is built on gentoo we can use gentoos portage! You may think OH MY GAWD HOW! Well I should mention chromeos uses its own portage repo. wont explain how to change maybe in edition two of ultimate guide.

How 2:

1. Go root, REQUIRED DONT FORGET! sudo -i

2. Run this command, dev_install

3. Let it run and Y every option given

4. done

You can now emerge certain packages like vim on your chromebook! No crostini nonsense needed! This will also bring alot of other tools which i wont mention! `sudo emerge vim`

Chapter 6 Ending

There are many more things you can do to hack chromeos like change your splash screen kill auto updates and much much more, but those will be for edition two where i will rewrite everything. Im tired of writing this and should bring your little brother chromebook alot further!

I made back the 14000 I'd lost and now my goombling no longer has a negative effect on my dramacoin balance.
