Story hour: He stands behind you

There's a man, tall and lanky. His breath the smell of cold dank spaces. His touch the spider's leg, brushing down your skin.

There's a man, whose face nobody has ever seen, but you can always feel him, when all the noises become apparent, and that little nagging feeling, of the one behind your shoulder.

There's a man, he is always grinning, like he knows a joke that nobody else knows. You can hear his breathing, at the edge, where you hear those noises from the corners of the world.

There's a man, sometimes little children play with him, spinning round and round and round. Trying to catch a glimpse of the man who they know is always just out of view.

Sometimes children catch him, the way children do. Spinning while forgetting why they were spinning, they catch a glimpse of the man by surprise.

Sometimes children catch him, then some are found inconsolable and crying. They grow up to be scared of the dark and of being ever alone.

There are others though, the ones with only a single slipper as evidence of their existence in the middle of a park. Or the ones, the young ones only remembered by a crazed aunt or uncle, muttering and arguing about a nephew or niece, or son or daughter, that nobody else remembers.

There's a man behind you. He is breathing right by your shoulder, reading about himself along with you.

Be careful as you turn your head now, be careful not to catch him as he is distracted.

Don't want you to become another missing story, remembered like memories of a false life.

The race

Nigel chose the blacks. Savannah chose the whites. Carthage chose the Latinx. Abigail chose the Indians. Austin chose the aboriginals. Matthew chose the natives. Milonwey chose the Chinese. Krumen the East Asians. Kaltan the Europeans. Vilnius the arabs.

They all started with a high reproduction playstyle. Nobody else could see anybody else's part of the board because of the fog of war. In the beginning Abigail has memorized the openings and see got a spiritual civilization leading in South Asia. She tried to go for a religious win by dropping out multiple religions over time, but each one became it's own thing and kept separating. By mid game her board was called the land of a million gods.

In Africa Nigel did not care how he did it. He just wanted to max out the population as best as he could. He made his people reproduce as much as he could to the point that by midgame Kaltan felt bad enough for Nigel's people to start supplying them with free resources so that they didn't die out.

Matthew has no idea how to play the game. He just made a character sheet that made his civilization look a lot smarter than they were. The first meeting with Kaltan's people killed them all. He left the board early with his remaining people being completely assimilated in other boards.

Vilnius did the high levels of violence and aggression play. He had no other choice due to the fact that he was surrounded by different civilizations on all sides. In between he manged to accumulate enough knowledge to get a cultural supremacy, but that soon died out as the aggression traits were too strong for that kind of play.

Krumen was a solitary player, a bit neurodivergent in real life, his game played similarly. All of his settlements became very isolationist and perfectionist until each of them was the equivalent of a mini-empire that didn't expand anywhere. He tried to build vertically on a game that was designed to be played horizontally. Once he thought he had researched enough, he unleashed the Japanese, he almost won, but it was like watching someone who just didn't understand how other people thought. He got bombed out by Kaltan and Savannah working together, making a last two standing deal. Krumen has to give up on a military win after that and quietly began vertically building his societies again in his own corner.

Carthage was a middling player. He came into the game when it was already halfway done. He chose the Latinx but their ways were too strange for him and he had limited experience with the build. After a half dozen turns his economy was already in decline and dependent on Savannah.

Austin got massacred in Australia and other Island nations. He left the game early along with Matthew.

Milonwey built up his territory to number in the billions of people, noticed that the guy next to him was doing the same thing. Thought about his plans, decided to isolate to build up his research secretly and max out. He thought he was winning but Kaltan managed to reach the industrial age first. After that Milonwey got hit hard. Almost lost his lands. Thankfully was too big to fail. Got everyone out of his territory then focused on making his people smarter faster. Realized he could cheat through a glitch in the rules and kill off loads of his own people to speed up development. By midgame it looked like he might win but it was a dicey thing, very hit or miss.

Round 2:

Austin and Matthew were out. There people guaranteed to get assimilated into the other players groups.

Nigel was still doing a population boom with some of his territories going through genocides. Kaltan was trying to haggle Nigel to give him the northern African territories in exchange for more resources for the rest of Africa.

Savannah was leading in culture victory. Krumen noticed this and started neurodivergentally copying Savannah. He released this weird inhuman thing called k-pop but for some reason it sold really well. Savannah in frustration tried to reinvent her culture too but she didn't have Krumen's autsitic understanding of inherent human biology and kept fricking it up. Kruman began to catch up on a cultural victory.

Carthage tried to fix his position by trying to build a bridge with Milowey. He figured that he could profit and grow his territories while Milowey and Savannah both traded with each other to get him to their side. Both were wrong. Carthage just wanted to survive till the end game for now. On the other hand he could not help but feel nervous as he was seeming losing control over the Central American territories.

Abigail was really not good at mid game, but as long as she focused on the region as a whole instead of any of the people or groups, she could still do enough abstract calculations to remain in the game. She realized that she had so many people, and that she hadn't massacred any so had a healthy population growth rate and population pyramid, if she got her people to even a wealth range of 6k per person per year, she would become the 3rd most powerful player in the game. That was good enough for her for now.

Milowey was having troubles now. His population was beginning to collapse. He invested in robots and tech trees but many of his regions did not have a long term innovation culture in the past few centuries. Kaltan had badly damaged his innovation and tech tree development. He tried to bring back the Chinese soul by converting all the people on his lands into one ethnic group. That way even if his population was declining, the number of han chinese were still increasing.

Krumen knew his population pyramid was fricked, he didn't care anymore for it. He just wanted to see what fascinating ways he could move and tweak the game and it's populations habits and mindsets. He was only limited by his own autism.

Kaltan had been so busy celebrating how badly he had fricked over the other players that he didn't even notice that his own people were beginning to fall in decline. He made a deal with the Russians considering them his own players but turned out that they were too strongly influenced by being next to Milowey and the struggle with Savannah. They became a breakaway region and it was fricking him hard now. All of his skill points were being used to ensure that his people did not collapse completely but somehow kept chugging along at their current levels. If only he could unite all of Europe he still had a chance.

Vilnius - Vilnius tried to bring back his people's cultural sensibilities and new innovation. He succeeded in some smaller territories but overall it was a fairly middling game. He was forced to embrace 19th century western moralities and allow the women to go out in public.

Late game:

Nigel's regions were for the most part in chaos. The only part of his board with any real chance of long term success was the Eastern territories. He united them into the EAC and began expanding the EAC doing everything to avoid population bomb territories. Rest of Africa was either falling into decline or collapse. North Africa was taken over by Kaltan to feed his empire with more young bodies.

Savannah managed to complete the Canada US merger. She also managed to diplomatically subjugate Mexico and the Pacific Alliance, promising them growth in exchange for subservience.

Carthage was furious. He had lost control of his western territories to Savannah. Making trade alliances with Milonwey didn't do enough to balance out the level of corruption in his territories, and he kept shouting about getting too many blacks which ruined his chances of winning which made the entire group too uncomfortable and they asked him to leave. While his territories continued to exist on the board they were now all but guaranteed to end up taken over by Savannah.

Abigail had pretty much managed to guarantee her people would be the 3rd strongest and maybe even the 2nd strongest in the late game. Nobody wanted to frick around with her as she didn't frick around with any of them, but at the same time trade with her always was a net positive. Everyone remained polite to her while keeping an eye on her success.

Milowey realized that the exploit of killing his people fricks him over later in the game. He had not managed to build enough robots to save his region and there was limited scope for geographical expansion. He made some alliances with Russia and Mongolia, realized he didn't like the Russians, thought about invading Mongolia for expansion but realized that still didn't solve the problem of his people disappearing. In the end he had to leave the game because his people had become too xenophobic to grow any further.

Krumen became the 4th largest power in the game. Remained neurodivergent and limited to his territories.

Kaltan gave up control to Savannah and let her indirectly control his territories once they hit the point of no return and could only hope to live a good life with US defending them. France was the last territory to break.

Vilnius became a middle kingdom empire. Again as it did multiple times throughout the game. It would remain there, dividing the world into two for a few more centuries.

The final remaining players were Nigel with the EAC, Savannah with influence expanding across South America and Europe, Abigail with her own forever empire, Krumen with his autism, and Vilnius forever stuck in place.

In the end Savannah won then genocided Africa once Euthanasia became vogue again in 2300's.

The end.
