I think Hamas is expecting this to be the same song and dance that normally happens. Small issue, they killed Americans, so this is not going to end well for Hamas...

You're right, but for the wrong reason. America having a dozen civilians killed because they happened to be in the wrong place at the wrong time will not change their response to the conflict one fricking iota. Same for Europe and pretty much any non-r-slurred state. There is a degree of lenience given to foreign casualties in these situations. Hamas did not attack America, and America won't treat them as if they did until they do so explicitly or otherwise officially declare war.
