Introduction This report has two purposes: first, to present Mozzarella's research (both recent surveys and years of knowledge) into consumer interaction with browsers.
O P E R AT I N G S Y S T E M S M I S U S E T H E I R P R I V I L E G E D P O S I T I O N Deceptive pattern practices targeted at consumers Inhibiting Independent App Discovery -All five major platforms today (Google, Apple, Meta, Amazon, Microsoft) bundle their respective browsers with their operating systems and set them as the operating system default in the prime home screen or dock position.
Yet, this theoretical confidence does not mean people consciously choose their software, nor does it translate to action: a large number of people report never thinking about the browser or search engine they use.
In the following scenario, a Bing user is displayed an advert at the top of their search engine results page to dissuade them from downloading Firef*x and prompted to use the browser which is already pre-installed on their Windows operating system (Microsoft Edge).
Operating system providers, particularly Google, have an extensive range of marketing and advertising resources which can be deployed to promote their brand and products; this effectively serves as constant priming for their browser.
However, very few have recognized the connection between these issues and the importance of browser competition, or studied the role of OCA practices as a way to implement (or thwart) consumer choice and welfare.

Browsers are such a fricking stupid development in use of networking and the internet.
As much as it makes me hate myself to say it, smartphones are a step in the right direction pushing back towards applications rather than some pointless application in an application model.
It seems like most of the paper is making assumptions like that it's impossible to have an OS that respects privacy and you need a browser on top of the OS to do that which is obviously false.
Also lol whitey are r-slurred

So furryfox is basically upset that companies set the browser they develop as the default, and then if you use another browser while access using said companies for whatever free service you're using you get ads to use their product.
What this tells me is Mozzarella is incapable of delivering a functional OS or any free services to advertise to switch their browser that people will use.
I'm getting call backs to Opera bitching to the EU to make Microsoft have a 'browser picker' on first boot on your brand new OS, which didn't help them at all so they had to get sold off to some Chinese company.
