A homelab is when you buy outdated 13 year old hardware off eBay and pretend you're working at your IT job at home. This is the equivalent of a janitor going home and mopping his floor with a 2nd hand mop and bucket and because they love to mop. Except somehow this janitor mixed bleach and ammonia together and gassed themselves.

A homelab can be useful as a sandbox environment for testing and learning stuff, or selfhosting services rather than relying solely the cloud (someone else's computer).

Only neets, :!marseytrain:s and karmawhores call it a homelab though. Normal people call it, "my server," or "a couple computers I've got at home."

Saw a listing for a Dell for $20 bucks and thought that'll do and when I got there it was a PE 1800 with both its power supplies 8Gs of RAM, a 120 Gb HDD, the raid card and a dual network card. Didn't solve my problem but I didn't care at that point.

Huh art films are available on Torrent? I'm a giant film nerd and I use real time torrent streaming to watch movies on my TV all the time.

Have you never tried those Kodi extensions? It's not just torrents, they index every online streaming video pirate site, make one big list, combines it with open subtitle services, and makes them searchable like Netflix. It's amazing. Netflix with a million movies on demand, with blu-ray rip quality.

I only download torrents for the really rare stuff (also Criterion Channel's streaming service has tons of rare art movies).

You're doing it wrong if you still download everything. 2022 = webtorrent + TV apps

Jump in the discussion.

What are these extensions your referring to?

Jump in the discussion.

No email address required.

Elementum is my favourite for torrents

https://howtomediacenter.com/en/install-elementum-kodi/

The Crew is what I use for streaming sites usually for TV shows or when torrents can't find it

https://www.firesticktricks.com/best-kodi-addons.html

These extensions make playlists for all the top trending shows on Netflix/HBOmax/paramount etc so you don't even need to use the other ones unless you're trying to bang a chick and don't want to nerd out.

Make sure you get a good android box... A fast one with a new Android version (or firestick 4k plus). Makes it way easier. Get one with a browser then just search "kodi apk mirror" and download the APK

She. I had originally exposed it to the internet, it was originally a temporary measure for when I was educating myself, and then I didn't lock it down afterwards.

And in another post they mention they just used default passwords, very nice

I actually doubt it's a VMware issue at all, just because you have access to a virtual environment doesn't mean you have credentialed access to the AD environment.

Dumb fricking :marseytrain2: probably installed some exe that spread through it's network. It's possible, but it'd take an attacker with some manual intervention and time on their hands. Doubt they'd waste that much time.

That's far more likely than their virtual environment getting compromised.

I don't remember the name, but there was a CVE that did come out last month with the only corrective actions saying do best practices like using the integrated esxi firewall, segmenting the network that VMkernal interfaces are on, not allowing unsigned vibs to be installed, etc.

I think that's what the :marseytrain2: is referencing, but I think it was only denial of service, not allowing guest access to the vms.

What I'm guessing happened is the :marseytrain2: downloaded some "tool" off sorceforge or some shit that's actually ransomware and installed it on a windows guest OS.

Absolutely. My firewall wasn't set for geo filtering. That's changing. I had ports open that never should have been open. I'm not familiar with corporate titles. Does sysadmin mean that she's the head of the IT team?

If not, it could just mean that her job is to just go from system to system and install some random software using commands her boss gave her. Or just some routine tasks. We don't know what sort of organization she works for.

Jump in the discussion.

Usually a sysadmin would be in charge of managing, updating and monitoring the servers. They usually have basic programming skills (scripting like Python) but their duties are tard wrangling the servers.

The thing is opening a firewall to the internet would be like a Doctor taking a lunch break during your heart surgery, it’s obviously a bad idea if you have a basic understanding of the job.
