I kinda want to try Linux, Windows has been getting really butt. But I've heard even people who are good at computers have to spend a lot of time struggling with random shit breaking

I have linux mint and random shit breaks which is annoying, and for some God forsaken reason if you want to be able to middle-mouse-click scroll you need to go into some obscure text file deep in the guts of the OS and copy-paste something to do it, only for it to stop working anyway.

There's definitely things I do like about Linux. I love the package management system. But I feel like linux is a hobby for people who like the idea of toying with computers like a car mechanic. For anyone that is serious and just wants to get shit done it's AIDS. Half your time is going to be focused on fixing the OS and reading StackExchange, not on doing the productive thing you want to do.

Oh, and the commands you use in the terminal are nonsense. They follow no convention or pattern. Some commands are initials or acronyms of the command. Others are shorthand. Many just have no bearing on what the command is and is just someone mashing their keyboard. There have been discussions on rewriting the commands to a modern convention because apparently the reason why its so dogshit is because back in the old days there simply wasn't enough RAM to give commands a proper convention, so they started just assigning random at a certain point. But no one wants to renovate the commands because, "its cool having to figure it all out" and "it's history!". FFS!!!

Linux people are incapable of doing anything productive. Where other people are writing software, making music, doing some project, linux people are fellating themselves in their free time over the idea that they are doing the same thing that computer people did half a century ago.

  • terminal? you can use the same shell on linux that apple computers (what's a computer?:marseyretard2:) use -- zsh.

  • you definitely spend more time tinkering than in windows, especially at the beginning, and many people never get to the point where they've set up everything they need.

  • high end audio software is a chore in linux. I would stick to windows for that.

  • almost anything related to coding, writing, graphics (incl 3d, video) works fine in linux, some of it better.

  • adults shouldn't be gaming that much anyway.

tbh, if I wasn't so good at computers, I wouldn't have broken random shit :marseycry:

:marseyclueless: "hmm today I will customize my OS completely and download another desktop environment and also janky AUR packages"

:ragestrangle: "NOOOO everything was working the other day how could this be happening to me"

:marseyrain: I installed linux on my mom's laptop a few years ago and she hasn't had a single problem, she even uses the scanner and printer with it
