I knew we were fricked 5 years ago when Google did a presentation on tensors at my office. It's just a matter of time. Unironically we need the social technology of UBI as soon as possible or we're going to have to go invent it on the fly with pitch forks and automated kill drones.

Why is it so alarming?

They aren't themselves scary, it was that the tech was much further along than I expected and it is starting to seem less and less that there is some unknown boundaries that will prevent just more of the same from getting us to general ai. Things in the next decade are going to be very weird. I don't think many people are quite ready for it.

The original pong was released in 1972. That's 50 years ago.

Assuming neuron chips scale up at the same rate, in 50 years we should have a neuron that can comprehend the world well enough to play Elden Ring and speedrun it without any armor.

Cant that be done with a standard neural net and enough computing power?

For something like Elden Ring I don't think so. At least I have never seen it. Standard neural nets start failing hard once you get games where there is any movement variety.

With OpenAI you probably could though. Or at least a mediocre g*mer with OpenAI.

This isn't that new. I remember reading that a bunch of scientists got brain cells to frick about in a rudimentary flight sim and that was pretty sobering right there. (https://www.newscientist.com/article/dn6573-brain-cells-in-a-dish-fly-fighter-plane/) (Just now noticed that this was in 2004 :marseyspit:)
