The orange site manages to make me hate academics more :marseylaptopangry: many users post about how they’ve spent _decades_ writing a thesis.

>Here's my thesis procrastination story: :marseygrad:

Fast forward to a week before the [thesis] deadline. I a few broken prototypes and no very little else of the 10,000 word thesis I was supposed to hand in at the end of the week. I finally broke down in front of my professor. In the end I sat around the corner from his office all week as he checked on me every hour or so to make sure I was writing it. I took breaks to go cry in the potty :marseycrying:. I just barely managed to finish it and hand it in on time. I cried again, this time tears of joy and relief :marseyhappytears:.

What really stands out to me, apart from the heroic push at the end, is that in the back of my mind I knew I was going to procrastinate on this project and even that knowledge wasn't enough to stop

Imagine having to baby this literal adult r-slur just to get him tf out of your department.

Can you imagine posting :marseyl: this big publicly. Like holy frick, the only time I cry is at like funerals.

And the fact that a presumably passable thesis was produced in a week. No hope for academia if a weeks work is the standard.

I can hardly think of any bsc thesis that would take more than a week to write.

I think you're too harsh on that one, for subjects where there is an actual objective basis to measure against, like sciences, it could take significant time I imagine. Same goes for those where there is some practical/research component (unless you make everything up lmao)

Yeah sure if there is a time factor to your research sure, but the combined work put into it hardly reaches 50-80 hours.

I'm also talking about like undergrad and maaaybe grad school depending on the subject. I know burgers don't have to write a thesis for that and honestly it's so useless I have no idea why we do it.

I probably took a bit more than that broken up over many adderall induced sessions of hyperfocus over 3 months. I did have to revamp the whole thing halfway through, though.

lol of course we'd have phds on rdrama.

Lol no the comment I was responding to was about a bsc. PhD students save their addies for their qualifying exams.

Heroic

not heroic, you literally scrambled to clean up a mess that you KNEW YOU WERE MAKING with the help of an actual adult literally babysitting you like a 14yr old that wont do his math assignments

Youd be surprised at the number of people who live inside the halls of the ivory tower throwing their youth away simply because they cant imagine themselves in the outside world. Being ultra passionate about your life's work is one thing, but then you have some whose ego is way too tightly coupled to their membership in the intelligentsia and others for whom academia is like an adult daycare.

I cannot comprehend it and I don’t think I had a great early adulthood.

I wish none of the academics I have read in the last week were ever born, learned to read, passed their exams or wrote their theses.

:platyseethe:

I could force myself to study boring stuff in school but having to uncritically repeat things I disagree with vehemently is the most humiliating experience I've ever had. I'd much rather memorize chemistry formulas than this bullshit.

I just think the field is too full of rslurs, asskissing, and low compensation to be enjoyable, especially with the hoops people have to jump through.

Just pivot to being a codecel and make 6x as much with half the work and only some of the hoops.

I sort of hoped to be a researchcel earlier but yeah doing my master's completely disillusioned me on that. No way I'm going to have my current classmates as colleagues for life and not flip out at some point.

The guys suggesting chatGPT will replace step 1 of Swartzwelders technique are probably right for many, many industries. And itll be fricking mind numbingly r-slurred. Just millions of deskjockeys trying to 'fix' incoherent AI garbage that will still have no overarching point thus being no better than chatGPT

Swartzwelders technique

new term learned today :marseynotes:

I did something similar when writing my dissertation, no matter how shit it came out, I always wrote the entire "section" at once when discussing results or writing about the current state of science. It's a lot easier to fix 6 shitty paragraphs than write 1 great one.

deskjockeys use chatGPT to write theses for other desk jockeys who use ChatGPT to summarize it and then use ChatGPT to write their critiques of it and send off to their managers who use ChatGPT to summarize it, onandonandon

When the coof hit they replaced my cryptography final with a 15K word paper on a topic of our choice, so I chose something I knew nothing about (PQC on elliptic curves) and cranked it out in 3 weeks.

Wouldn’t do it again but lmao git gud academcels

Jump in the discussion.

No email address required.

Do you mean PQC? anyways, sounds based as heck. I assume this was a grad course, the standards were not nearly that high in my undergrad one and yet 60%+ of the class still failed or dropped it because they were r-slurred CS majors and it was taught like a real math course.
