Noo dude! My shitty init script that ten people use is way better than the init system that millions of servers use in prod! :soycry:

My findings report 95% of the neurodivergents angry about systemd have no idea how to accomplish anything using it, and think writing a 1000 line bash script is easier than having two 5 line systemd unit files.

I think I'd respect them more if they admitted they just like it for purely hobby/ideological reasons. Like LISP programmers.

There are LISP programmers? It wasn't just invented as an esoteric language to weed out undergrads? :marseyworried:

LISP programmers are very much a thing. If you're a purist Common Lisp and Scheme are the big camps. They are mostly relegated to academia IME but they crop up every so often in weird places. Scheme was the only time I've had a "eureka" moment w.r.t. programming.

I found it confusing and weird when I first used it in 2015 or whenever. Then I figured it out and moved on.

I always feel like an imposter because I don’t have the attention span to hold on to a grudge like the average unixcell. :marseyimposter:

It's literally an neurodivergent meltdown because something is a little bit different to what they're used to.

”what init system do I run” in 2023, like is that really an issue that needs yakshaving? Just admit it’s a fun hobby.

This comment

First, users of daemoncowtools-ish init/rc systems do not necessarily need to use shell scripts; they can use any language they like: Perl, Python, execline, nosh (the language), whatever. Second, that sysvrc service scripts are long and buggy does not imply shell scripts were inherently buggy; service scripts for OpenRC and BSD rc.d, for instance, are simple, clear and easily auditable. Third, in comparison with the ever-increasing number of unresolved bugs in systemd, the number of bugs in service scripts due to the shell language is negligible.

Made me sneed so much.

Instead of a set of simple config files and a stable set of services, lets use custom scripts almost always written in a barely-functional language like Bash. But its not a big deal because we can also write even more byzantine scripts in full programming languages, without any structure/framework, but also no one does that anyway.

:marseysneed:

The only good argument is something smaller and simpler, not some "there was nothing wrong with bash".

There's only 2 things I hate more than bash, and that's batch and powershell.

I haven't personally used it but my windowcel friends seem to like powershell.

I've had to made some scripts by force and god dammit, is like Java for shells... so fricking verbose

I've seen some people use Ansible on prod windows. Seemed pretty crazy to me.

We do that, just run it in WSL.

It's kinda funny you can't run it in windows actually, considering the whole system is written in python.

For real. I cannot understand why these guys are so upset they "got replaced by a small systemd service" if you will.
