Noo dude! My shitty init script that ten people use is way better than the init system that millions of servers use in prod! :soycry:

My findings report 95% of the neurodivergents angry about systemd have no idea how to accomplish anything using it, and think writing a 1000 line bash script is easier than having two 5 line systemd unit files.

LISP programmers are very much a thing. If you're a purist Common Lisp and Scheme are the big camps. They are mostly relegated to academia IME but they crop up every so often in weird places. Scheme was the only time I've had a "eureka" moment w.r.t. programming.

This comment

First, users of daemoncowtools-ish init/rc systems do not necessarily need to use shell scripts; they can use any language they like: Perl, Python, execline, nosh (the language), whatever. Second, that sysvrc service scripts are long and buggy does not imply shell scripts were inherently buggy; service scripts for OpenRC and BSD rc.d, for instance, are simple, clear and easily auditable. Third, in comparison with the ever-increasing number of unresolved bugs in systemd, the number of bugs in service scripts due to the shell language is negligible.

Made me sneed so much.

Instead of a set of simple config files and a stable set of services, lets use custom scripts almost always written in a barely-functional language like Bash. But its not a big deal because we can also write even more byzantine scripts in full programming languages, without any structure/framework, but also no one does that anyway.

:marseysneed:

The only good argument is something smaller and simpler, not some "there was nothing wrong with bash".

the latest revisions of outlook are fricking r-slurred, if an image is high resolution like a smartphone camera photo, it scales up the image for printing to match dpi rather than match the page so you get the top left corner and that's it

windows 10 and 11 just fricking lose network printers for no reason, so if you use a network printer you may as well uninstall it after you print because you will have to re-add it to make it work next time anyways

Jump in the discussion.

No email address required.

I don't trust or like printers so I blame the printer. My best guess would be investigating it's network settings related to mDNS.

Jump in the discussion.

No email address required.

it started happening after going from windows 7 to windows 10 (on the same printer) then never stopped happening since.

windows XP actually had the best printer handling for home networks, if you put in the printer's netbios name instead of IP address it would connect by device name every time so even if your router restarted and gave the printer a new IP windows XP would find it.

windows 7 would need a bit of prodding after IPs got reassigned but otherwise was fine

Jump in the discussion.

No email address required.

The "separate /usr" thing is so fricking r-slurred, and I've heard it surprisingly many times. No, you should not set your computer to boot without /usr mounted. You're going to cause so many bizarre bugs, do you even know how many important binaries are in there? It's a lot, regardless of whether you have the /bin directories merge that some distros do. And if you want /usr to be another partition or a network share or something, that's even still fine! All you have to do is set it up to mount from initramfs you absolute troglodyte.

Jump in the discussion.

No email address required.

Yeah everything I've read seems to suggest the "separate /usr, /var, /bin, etc." are accidents from when drives were small as frick.

Jump in the discussion.

No email address required.

Yep. Literally a leftover of drives not being big enough to fit everything in /bin at some ancient poitn in time.

If archlinux had some alternative to systemd I'd probably use that, but eh it does its job albeit in a convoluted way.

Kind of interesting how things become hate memes though. Most people who complain about systemd don't really know why they don't like it. They just know it's supposed to be bad and pass on that opinion.

Jump in the discussion.

Yup It's impressive how there's still push back in 2023. Just vague allusions to "unix philosophy" and cope.

I feel like BSD is stuck in not improving their init situation at this point too. There was movement in that space just like Linux but now they're hailed as keeping the fire burning for init scripts.

Fam i'm 12 years old, and still smarter than you, and i'm from Bangladesh and live in England. I've been brought up in London for all my life and ive only been in Bangladesh on holidays. overall i've spent around 15 weeks there. i learned about Nazis a year ago and i'm all against them. There's also a game called Call Of Duty World War 2 where you go AGAINST the Nazis and fight in the American army. do you think i'm stupid and old enough (I'm 12 to remind you) to be a Nazi? You people are so jarring and you don't understand the impact of games and what they mean. I've always hated Nazis. why would you think a 12 year old g*mer is a Nazi, you stupid b-word? Most of my life, I have spent gaming. This is not wasting my life and i play for fun. I am a Muslim and pray every day.
