Remember this guy?
This is the guy who was photoed with Trump and mostly responsible for Brexit, much to the dismay of some europhiles:
Anyway, Nigel reeing here:
https://x.com/Nigel_Farage/status/1674507257248116746
Some key quotes include
'This is serious political persecution at the very highest level of our system. If they can do it to me, they can do it to you too.'
Speaking of the importance of having a bank account, he added: 'You effectively become a non-person, you don't actually exist.
'It's like the worse regimes of the mid-20th century, be they in Russia or Germany, you literally become a non-person.
'I won't be able to have a debit card linked directly to my account. I won't really be able to exist or function in a modern 21st century Britain.'
Story here
He suspects he was cancelled as revenge for spearheading Brexit and has tried to open up 7 other bank accounts in the UK, but they all refuse. Being cancelled online is one thing. Not being able to open a bank account to exchange money is quite the next level. He's saying how stressful it's been and that he might have to move from the UK. He even claims his closest family members have had their bank accounts closed too.
Maybe commie China has come sooner than I anticipated.
There is a tiny ray of hope. No. 10 (the government) are looking into the matter and have given a warning to the banks over being too trigger happy when shutting accounts down.

yup, we just need to concentrate power in even fewer hands, surely the FED won't ban anyone from the payment network for political reasons
Jump in the discussion.

The problem is that current payment processors have a de facto monopoly, but are still treated as a non government entity for regulations. The fed will at least be regulated and subject to government rules.

The hope for FedNow is that they will literally be constitutionally barred from doing that.

It's not subject to the same degree of accountability as actual government institutions. In fact, it needs to have a larger degree of independence in order to act effectively.
Expanding the Fed's responsibilities and power to processing payments for the general population would also require limiting ts powers, in just the right way as to not cripple its ability to serve its original purpose.
I strongly doubt that the relevant bills for such new limits will be passed in time. The Dems probably have no interest in limiting those powers, so they'll try to delay indefinitely.

did you know that drug dealers recommend using usps because unlike other shipping companies, usps needs a warrant to open your mail in most cases

Because of laws from 150 years ago when the government still respected privacy rights. I don't think such laws exist for a payment network run by the Federal Reserve.

I love India stack, one of the best things the government has done this century. Financial infrastructure should be treated as a public utility, it costs a pittance to develop and run really compared to its importance.

It really blows my mind that it's not in the west. How the frick do you argue that bank accounts and payment processing are any less essential to day-to-day life than electricity and running water? You can't even pay for the latter without the former!

our electricity comes from private companies in most states
in my town the water is government but some areas it's a company, too.
it's better than suffering under communism

When they're privately owned the utilities are still regulated to shit, may as well be government run.

True. Adaptation only happens in countries whose national currency situation is already a completely fricked. As long as 99% of Americans can live reliably using USD and FedNow, they won't have reason to do switch to anything else.

i use to say get a bank without esg, but they are about to get rid of all them in the next year or two i imagine. you can tell my local bank sees the writing on the wall, they changed up all their branding to look fancy and are advertising everywhere for new accounts. started as soon as banks started dissapearing

There’s the odd independent credit union here and there, you find them more in ruralcel areas as I think it’s a communal farmer scheme that sets them up. I’ve thought about switching over because banks charge you so many fricking fees now for everything that used to be free… if I don’t have so much invested in my bank they’d be nicking me for around 30 bucks a month.

im wondering what their credit union plan is. credit unions are non profit so they can't be interesting to banks, but they are competition. credit unions are insured through the NCUA and not the FDIC, so bank runs aren't going to effect the safety of credit union money. my credit union savings account gets better interest than banks too last time i checked. getting a debit card through my credit union is more expensive though

I dunno if they really are competition for regular banks, they’re not common, don’t advertise to attract new people or set out to loan aggressively for profit. You’ll never find one their bank machines anywhere so you’d always pay a fee to withdraw cash.
But the average person should be considering credit unions especially now.

bc they aren't for profit. They are usually for something specific. Navy Federal Credit union for people in the navy for example. There is one i use since my grandma is a teacher. lots are set up to help farmers and ranchers. They are good for the people who use them since they specifically arent for profit. they can make loans based off things other than credit ratings and don't have to justify it since they are helping members. if you rely on getting cash out of an atm then you probably are better off with a large national bank

You don't need to be in the Navy for Navy Federal, any branch can bank with them. I've had my Navy Federal account for nearly 10 years, signed up while at Air Force BMT. I've been able to keep my account open with them despite being out for 6 years.
I just keep the minimum in my old accounts with them, mainly keeping it if I ever want to use them for a competitive loan. It's a great account to keep open after separating. Anyone currently in the military needs to bank with Navy Federal, you get paid early too.
